Chronological - Information presented in time sequence, either forward or backward, is chronological. This organization pattern works well in explaining events over time such as monthly sales figures for the past year. Chronological ordering is useful in describing history or development, such as background leading to a personnel/management disagreement. Chronological sequencing of ideas is necessary to show time relationships.…

These four men, George Eastman, J.P. Morgan, John Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie were all Captains of Industry. They are all considered Captains of Industry because they all donated huge portions of their wealth to society. George Eastman treated his workers with respect and dignity, giving them fair pay, reasonable hours, and the best benefits he could manage, as the writer states. Both the reading and the website show examples of the places he donated to, such as large sums of his money to children's dental clinics, the Eastman school of music, the Tuskegee institute for African American students, and he gave out scholarships and internships to many M.I.T. engineering students. Eastman also signed away $20 million to M.I.T., $2.5 million…

This technique describes the second major element of ethos that is practical wisdom. The three steps in this technique are showing off your experience, bend the rules, and appear to take the middle course. Showing that you have experience trumps anything someone has learned. To bend the rules Heinricks proposes, “If the rules don’t apply, don’t apply them--unless ignoring the rules violates the audience’s values.” (70) Taking the middle road can help to make you opinion seem more reasonable than your opponents. This can help gain credibility since people tend to lean towards sensible options.…

Story Structure A quality narrative should help readers imagine the story, while also educating and entertaining the readers. In order to write a successful story, one must keep in mind the importance of story structure. Rhetorical tools within a narrative are very important. They help set the stage so the reader can understand the story from the author’s perspective. A narrative is structured so the reader can see things clearly. The structure contains the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction has a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence that states the main point of the narrative. The introduction will clarify the main points the writer will make throughout the body of the narrative. The body is where the narrative unfolds. The use of cause and effect helps the story transition from one part to the next. Cause and effect is another way for…

Like how in the starting paragraphs of The Perfect Storm the author uses a personal anecdote “You see so much bad weather that you kind of get used to it. But then you see really bad weather. And”. This is a personal story because you can see that the author uses words like “you”and he also provides the way he feels which is not found iis not always found in descriptive writing.. In contradistinction to this Adams can be found using lots of description in her article “hurricane katrina’s mighty winds tore up some towns to shreds, and drowned others in floodwaters.” This shows lots of description by creating imagery of what damage hurricane katrina did .Comparatively they both use cause and effect to describe the natural disasters. Like how Adams writes “The aftershock not only interfered with rescue efforts, they also triggered landslides that blocked rivers”. Cause and effect is shown, because it shows that for the landslides to have to occured there must have been an aftershock. Junger also uses cause and effect on page 162 of The Perfect Storm “ Too fast and we’d start surfing, too slow and the waves would just blast right over the boat.”. This depicts cause and effect because it says what the causes and effects of either going too fast or too slow during the…

It creates a story that can be analyzed and stripped apart to better understood because the basic patterns in literature lead a non-basic understanding. An instance of the understanding of the patterns in literature was freshman year reading John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, in which Mr. Olson explained the basic connections between the predator and prey relationships subtly placed throughout the novel, the small fish and the bigger fish, the dusty ant and the lion ant, and less subtly the pastor and Coyotito. Moreover Olson explained the often animal like diction that represents the primitive way the native’s are perceived, and lastly how the Pearl, though beautiful and large, brought with it the evils of greed. Chapter 1: Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It’s Not)…
