The Brakes Rhetorical tools within a narrative are very important. They help set the stage so the reader can understand the story from the author’s perspective. A narrative is structured so the reader can see things clearly. The structure contains the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction has a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence that states the main point of the narrative. The introduction will clarify the main points the writer will make throughout the body of the narrative. I tested the waters of bicycle riding by dragging my feet along the bumpy asphalt, but gravity was working against me. The incline was not allowing me stop, so jumped off. I walked away with only some bumps and bruises. The riding of my bike was put on hold for some time. My fear had gotten the best of me. It was not until the next summer that I would venture out again on my bike. The summer had given us one of those glorious sunsets that only Davis County pollution can bring. My brother and I were playing outside one warm evening. He was riding his big wheel, and I was perfectly content with drawing girly hearts with side walk chalk. The garage was wide open. There was my bike staring at me with lonely desperation. My dad said, “I am going down to grams. You should come down with me, and let’s try riding your bike. We will work on you learning to use the breaks.”
I started to put on the puppy dog eyes that can only work when you are Daddy’s girl. When my dad was about to give in my mom appeared, and she started lecture me on how we did not buy me a nice bike for it to sit and rust in the garage. She used the cliché, “There are starving children in Africa who would kill for a nice bike like
