audience to develop a more fully realized understanding of the imaginary world that she has created. She begins her essay stating that, "There it sits, sullen in the passenger's seat like a child in time out". Instead of saying there is a laptop on the passenger’s seat, she portrays a visual image of the object that occupied with human features to describe herself: sits, sullen, and like a child in time out. She wisely chooses her object that best describes her for the current situation. She expresses her through the laptop that she borrowed from someone else to imply how she asks help from a stranger to navigate her future. She further emphasizes her effort to accomplish her goals by using phrases such as, “frustrating drive”, "carful identification”, and “race against the clock” with the hope of inviting the reader to experience what she does to overcome her struggles. After a careful research, she might identify an opportunity or a misfortune that engage with the sense of emergency. Not just at the beginning but also at the end she induces the reader to believe in her effort and dedication stating that, “…I fill the cracks in the road to success made by force beyond myself” by nicely maintaining balance of imagery throughout the essay. The image that she created throughout her essay evokes her challenges and hopeless conditions effectively in pursuance of getting financial aid.
Moreover, Marquez used analogies quite appropriately throughout.
Analogy is a comparison based on similarity between two things in some respects. She effectively used both metaphors and similes to draw an analogy that is brief and to the point to enhance her power of effective writing. She asserts that " Everyday there is a new challenge; it is a game of adaptation". By comparing challenge to a game, she reinforces her strengths over her weaknesses. She convinced the reader that her strengths of preparedness, confidence, and hope for the next move bury the fear and uncertainty of her life. As an evidence to her metaphor, she devoted the body of her essay to describe how she "moved.... around the game board". She tries to accomplish her goals without losing in a similar way how an isolated king on the chess board survive without checkmate. She assures the reader that she possess a strong capability of flexibility to adapt her moves according to the situation. Despite of that, Marquez acknowledges that, "Just as in any game I endure losses and gains". She continuously unfold her movements on the game board using successful use of analogies to show the target audience that she is strong enough to accept both win and lose. She builds her credibility with the audience and signal them that she is ready to embrace the
challenge.
She further demonstrated her ability to persuade the reader through the effective use of anaphora. Anaphora emphasize key words or ideas in readers mind through regular repetition. For instance, "I beat each situation before it beats me", and "I won't let these circumstances victimize me. I won't let the guilt paralyze me", not only emphasize her courage but also have a great emotional appeal towards Marquez. At the same time, the word " beat" and the phrase" I won't let" balance the rhythm of the sentences as well as make the lines memorable. Her successful effort of using repetition establishes her self confidence in the readers mind while further convince the reader that her strengths are more powerful than her difficulties. Most importantly, by using these two successful sentences in her opening and closing she creates a good memorable impression of herself in the audience mind. It works well in the introduction and in the conclusion of her essay.
Through the effective use of imagery, analogy , and anaphora Marquez thoroughly persuades the audience her need of financial assistance. She successfully built the credibility in the eyes of the audience by visual presenting her difficulties and letting the audience feel in real. In addition, she was able to retain audience attention throughout her essay with the use of appropriate analogy. Lastly, in an effort to make a memorable impression on the audience, Marquez used repetition at her introduction and conclusion.
