George. H. W. Bush George H. W. Bush was born on July 6th 1946, in Milton, Massachusetts. He was born into a wealthy family. Bush’s family was politically active. As a student, Bush went to a boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts, called Phillips Academy. This school is where he met his wife Barbara Pierce. He was 17 and Barbara was 16. When he turned 18 he enlisted in the Navy. Bush fought in WWII and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He had a near death experience when his plane was hit during a bombing run in the Pacific. After escaping the burning aircraft he was saved by a navy submarine. Bush put together a strong team of advisers, including James Baker, Dick Cheney, Brent Scowcroft, and Colin Powell, and together they had some pretty significant accomplishments. Foreign- Bush was successful with foreign affairs. Bush devoted much of his time to foreign affairs, an area over which Presidents generally have more latitude than they do with domestic affairs. When Bush became President in 1989, the United States had already begun to see a thawing of relations with the Soviet Union. President Bush sent American troops into Panama to overthrow General Manuel Noriega, who was threatening the security of the canal and the Americans living there. Noriega was brought to the United States for trial as a drug trafficker. Bush signed a $1.35 trillion tax cut into law. Although the amount falls short of the $1.60 trillion the administration has been seeking, the bill does slash income tax rates across the board and provides for the gradual elimination of the estate tax. American voters did not think that President Bush cared enough about domestic issues. Some say Bush did not "selling" his achievements more successfully and running an inept campaign in 1992. He alienated the more conservative wing of the Republican Party in a variety of ways including breaking his promise not to raise taxes and cutting military
