George Washington Crossing The Delaware Painting Analysis
One of the most famous paintings from the American Revolution is a painting of our first president George Washington crossing the Delaware. The painting is accurately named, “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” and is set during an extremely tense time in the American Revolution. George Washington Crossing the Delaware After visiting the website I have learned how Leutze used composition, perspective, light, color, form, motion and proportion to make sure his painting conveyed the meaning and emotion he had in mind. The types of perspective that I see used are foreshorten and Leutze also made the boat in the back look further away while George Washington’s boat appears to be closer to observers. Light is used in this painting with the sunlight to highlight the center group of men on the boat. That same light is used on the face of the solider on the side of the boat paddling.…

John Trumbull’s painting Surrender of Lord Cornwallis was commissioned in 1817 and was hung in the Capitol Rotunda in 1826. This painting is from the Revolutionary War when the British Army surrendered under Cornwallis on October 19, 1781. This painting shows American General Lincoln extending a hand toward the British officer with the French troops to the left and American troops to the right. This is the ended to the Revolutionary War. I think that this painting is focusing on the event as a whole and not on the leaders. Cornwallis is not even presents in this painting and Washington is off in the background. This shows us that everyone was important who took part in the Revolutionary War. This particular painting took Trumbull a good amount…

The Apotheosis of Washington fresco has a historical context. Constantino Brumidi artistically created the 4,664 square foot fresco that took 11 months in the year of 1865, the year of the end of the Civil War. Brumidi created this artwork in an eventful period in history. In a single month, April 1865, both General Lee surrendered and the assassination of President Lincoln had occurred. Furthermore, Brumidi’s political views that his historical context had influenced seems to be apparent in his painting since in the painting, for instance, Jefferson Davis seems to be Discord holding two lighted torches, and Alexander H. Stephens appears to be Anger, whom a thunderbolt is striking and who is biting his finger. Evidently, there is a historical…

"His mind was great and powerful, without being of the very first order; his penetration strong . . . Perhaps the strongest feature in his character was prudence, never acting until every circumstance, every consideration, was maturely weighed; refraining if he saw a doubt, but, when once decided, going through with his purpose, whatever obstacles opposed." (Thomas Jefferson, as cited in "George Washington," 2006, para.19) George Washington is one of the most recognized and famous leaders in all history of the United States of America. He contributed greatly to the establishment of this prosperous country, from leading the Revolutionary armies into battle, to running the country as the first president, Washington has set precedence and example for all who have and are yet to follow. He was a noble man who demonstrated characteristics one would expect from a hero figure. He was not power-hungry, but did things and played his role for the good of the country, for patriotic purposes, to help America become the success it is today. In March of 1783, the soldiers of the American military were restless, bored and in a terrible state of doubt and distrust concerning the newly formed congress of the country. When these soldiers joined the army, they were promised a certain amount of money according to their service, but by the war 's end, congress was nearly broke and not in a position to pay them all they had earned. The soldiers planned a rebellion against congress for their unjust treatment, and attempted to hold an unauthorized meeting of the officers on the matter. Washington forbade the meeting, but called for one a few days later, in which he gave his speech concerning the Newburgh Conspiracy ("The Rise and Fall," 2006, para.2). General Washington was a highly respected man among his peers, soldiers, and fellow men.…

“Having been defeated in the battles for New York City, General George Washington and the remnants of the Continental Army retreated across New Jersey in the late fall of 1776. Vigorously pursued by the British forces under Major General Lord Charles Cornwallis, the American commander sought to gain the protection of the Delaware River. As they retreated, Washington faced a crisis as his battered army began to disintegrate through desertions and expiring enlistments. Crossing the Delaware River into Pennsylvania in early December, he made camp and attempted to reinvigorate his shrinking command.…

Good job on your project. I found your analysis to be quite deep and intriguing and love how you connected everything in the painting to showcase Washington's leadership qualities as well as his perseverance. I especially loved how you contrasted the right side and left side of the army.During that year, Washington was facing an array of criticism for his lack of leadership and inability to move the war forward. For me, I believe that the right side symbolizes the group of people that believed and had trust in Washington's abilities and did not wanted him to be replaced. The left side was a symbolic representation of those people who were critical of Washington's abilities and wanted him to be replaced. Despite this, Washington strong demeanor shows his perseverance and his passion to move forward despite the amount of criticism he was getting.…

This artwork is called Napoleon at Saint Bernard Pass otherwise known as Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Jacques-Louis David. This artwork depicts a very Romanesque portrait of King Napoleon I in a full military uniform riding on top of a horse that is kicking up onto its hind legs, while Napoleon is striking a pose with his right hand pointed up towards the sky. The Composition of this painting has Napoleon front and center in the middle of the canvas, on top of his horse, and he is actually highest figure on the canvas, most likely to signify his dominance as the ruler of France. Napoleon and his form a triangular composition with his horse, especially with Napoleon's arm raised forming the pinnacle of the triangle, which was most likely to symbolize that he was a very stable leader due to the stability of the triangular shape, and that he is at the very top. The size of the canvas is roughly 10 x 7 feet, which makes this portrait absolutely massive, this painting was to show off Napoleon as a strong and powerful due to the massive size of Napoleon himself, and the size of the horse he is in complete control of.…

Ideas of freedom are represented in this painting (Liberty Leading the People, Eugene Delacroix) in many different ways. Freedom is represented very plainly in the title as Liberty means being free or being free from society. The woman wants her people to be free from the government and free from oppression. The image of the woman rising above the enemy in a powerful stance upon the body of her people represents freedom and liberty because she is fighting for what she wants and what she believes in despite the threat against her and her life. The protagonists of the painting are a woman and a child, stereotypically women and children are seen to be weaker than men and unable to stand up and fight for what they believe in but this painting is using that idea to show the true power of the longing to be free.…

George Washington's portrait has many unique qualities and features that make it asymmetrical. The reason is because it is a portrait of a person it cannot have parts that correspondent to one another; they are not equal. When I mean not equal, I mean if you fold the painting in half the painting is not alike both sides are different. The portrait has symbolic meaning behind it because he was our first president and in the portrait he is surrounded with objects of his public life during the service of his country. Now analyzing the painting more thoroughly, one can notice his clothing attire was suitable for his position in power, since he was the president of the United States of America.i The suit symbolizes a switch to a public figure from general to president. The sheathed sword is ceremonial; it distinguished him as a "fine gentlemen" and is symbolic in a sense because it distinguished him as being head of state.i…
