Art Analysis: George Washington Crossing The Delaware
George Washington Crossing the Delaware After visiting the website I have learned how Leutze used composition, perspective, light, color, form, motion and proportion to make sure his painting conveyed the meaning and emotion he had in mind. The types of perspective that I see used are foreshorten and Leutze also made the boat in the back look further away while George Washington’s boat appears to be closer to observers. Light is used in this painting with the sunlight to highlight the center group of men on the boat. That same light is used on the face of the solider on the side of the boat paddling. Dark tones are mainly used in this painting. There is one color that the artist kept using, but it is not in the background only in the boat.

John Vanderlyn was commissioned by Congress in June 1836 to paint the Landing of Columbus for the Capitol Rotunda. The painting was placed in the Rotunda January 1847.1 Excitement and a sense of pride is shown in the painting by Christopher Columbus and his crew with the landing on newly found land. With Columbus landing in the West Indies, there were more chances of developing wealth.2 Sugar became one of the items that would produce great wealth, but it also caused a continuance of slavery. To produce the sugar for the sale, there was an increasing need for laborers. This meant many were brought into slavery that may have never witnessed it.…

The dominant colors are sea blue, a tint of gray, and within the cracks, a soft gold. Only a few soft colors are being used, therefore creating a muted piece of art. There is a certain sense of harmony in the vessel because the gold and the grayish-blue combine well together forming a balance that does not allow one color to show more vividly than another.…

Both the poem by David Shulman and the painting by Emanuel Leutze cover the same topic of Washington crossing the Delaware River; they are both different works, yet they have more similarities. The poem and the painting both include the weather and the surrounding terrain such as the rough water from the painting and the “stinging cold” from the poem. However, the poem offers more background to the actual event than the painting. An example is the mention of Washington being a general and the Hessian stronghold, something the viewer would not know about just from the painting.…

Vincent Van Gogh, a famous painter from the renaissance, once said, “What would life be if [people] had no courage to attempt to anything?” The poem, Washington Crossing the Delaware by David Shulman, and the painting, Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze, both exemplify courage in the face of adversity. The theme courage is shown through structure, mood, and technique.…

Fletcher Martin painted this using oil paint on a canvas. The painting seems to be layered but not with many colors. The painting itself is very neutral in the sense of color schemes. The most prominent color used in this painting is a gray. The fog gives off an eerie feel to the painting. In this work, gray is a color but could also be seen as a feeling or emotion in this painting. The gray also allows the figures to stand out more. It makes the color on the figures catch your eye first.…

Just a little bit off from the middle of the painting there is a structure not unlike Stone Hedge in England on top of a hill. Below it there is a river with small sailing ships going around, and on the bank there is a village filled with lots of wooden structures and even further left you can see a man using oxen to plow a field. On the other side of the painting you can see another section of the river where a larger sailing ship is being constructed on its…

One of the most famous paintings from the American Revolution is a painting of our first president George Washington crossing the Delaware. The painting is accurately named, “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” and is set during an extremely tense time in the American Revolution. The Americans and the British had been battling for freedom for many years now, and tensions were still rising. The American army under General George Washington were not doing so well and really need to win a battle to gain more control of land and obtain a higher morale. Winning a battle was their only option, so winning was what hey had to do.…

As for the light source of this piece the sun has moved from the east (childhood piece) to right above him giving him a glance of a new future. Cole’s color palette leans towards the warmer colors, as it gives a lighter value from the boy to his journey to the palace. Also, the use of dark colors from behind the boy and where the angel stands except, she has an aura of light. I believe his use of contrast between dark and light colors gives variety in the artwork. Continuing with motion, the cool colors, white, and curved lines give the river a flowing feel as the boat floats above.…

This painting was created by Georgia O’Keeffe. She spent her days at Lake George in New York and there is where she got her inspiration for her painting. This painting is an unusual painting because it is not a painting where you can see exactly what things are. You can make out the blue as water and the grey colors as clouds. She does well to not show her brush strokes in the painting. Everything is painted to where it looks real even though it is hard to make out what it is that you are looking…

The purpose of a monument is to commemorate a significant historical person or event that took place. One example of a monument is the Washington State Monument. This Monument was built to acknowledge and commemorate George Washington in his efforts as being once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first American president. Not all, but in some cases monuments do have the ability to bring people together. The Washington Monument stands more as a symbol of the U.S., but it can still have the power to bring people together. One example I can think of this monument bringing us together is showing the unity of our country. Most visitors seem to appreciate the Washington Monument for its size and meaning. I personally would show great…

The colors of the piece are lighter in the bottom left, including light pink, yellow, and orange. It then progresses to be darker in the top right corner of the piece, including a mix of dark blue and black. The bright stars and moon stand out against the dark night sky, and the darker walkway stands out against the lighter clouds.…
