The broad acred farms explain why tobacco and rice was the main base of the southern economy. Tobacco farms dominated Virginia’s economy while rice farms dominated the economy of the Carolinas. Both crops demanded slave labor, which led to a more diverse population. By 1700 blacks were 14% of Virginia’s population. Also, the population included Catholics with Maryland being founded by Roman Catholics seeking a haven from persecution. It also relied heavily on Tobacco for its wealth, but used white indentured servants instead of black slaves. This gave way to the struggling middle class in the south. In the Carolina’s, rice farms were the main source of money. These rice farms required black slaves that were used to working in that kind of environment. Georgia was founded to be a buffer state to protect the Carolinas from the Spanish in Florida and the French in Louisiana. All of these colonies, due to the broad acreage, became plantation…

The colony of Georgia was a very unique colony. Not only was it the very last colony to be established, but it also had an interesting role in the British continental colonies. In the beginning, it was intended to be both a defensive barrier against Florida, which was a Spanish colony, and a philanthropic experiment. However, later on this experiment was not a success and Georgia became more of a successful buffer against Florida. The early settlers of Georgia also had a very diverse background.…

Her own narrative voice is distinctive, assured, often poetic, as in her introduction to the place about which she writes: "McIntosh County, on the flowery coast of Georgia-small, isolated, lovely." She never forgets that it is home to the men and women, black and white who help tell her story. She says, "If the Messiah were to arrive today, this cloudless, radiant county would be magnificent enough to receive Him." Its beauty, however, is deceptive. The grinding poverty of its residents is all too real and ugly, and, until recently, the corruption so pervasive that the county's name was synonymous in the state with good-old-boy political chicanery. For example, one of the effective ploys to keep the black citizenry in line was to allow them to plunder wrecked transport trucks on busy U.S. 17.…

Colonial Georgia was established in 1733, fifty years after the original twelve by General James Oglethorpe. He and a trusted group of colonists intended to create the colony as a safe haven for persecuted Protestant sects, less wealthy Europeans and debtors wanting to re-esablish themselves. Georgia’s economy was deeply imbedded in agriculture, almost all of Georgia’s exports were food and products that must be grown on a farm. Georgia’s climate provided the perfect environment for such growing needs, with hot-humid summers, and short mildly cold winters.
