Geraldo No Last Name Summary
Many stories and events occur in the world of a babysitter. One of mine personally, include jumping on the trampoline with a seven year old girl. Keeping a child entertained quickly flipped around to cause hurt. While attempting a front handspring, she went flying off, straight to the ground below. She instantly started crying as she scraped her knees from the impact. Although in shock of what just happened, I ran over to her and picked her up to carry inside. We cleaned the wound and applied ice quickly, ready to settle down for the day. In everyone’s life, there’s moments when care is needed. These acts of kindness are required in life and they also portray who we are. Both Marin of “Geraldo No Last Name” and Shauna from Tell No One show …show more content…
One example of this is, “Only Marin can’t explain why it mattered, the hours and hours, for somebody she didn’t even know. The hospital emergency room. Nobody but an intern working all alone. And maybe if the surgeon would’ve come, maybe if he hadn’t lost so much blood, if the surgeon had only come, they would know who to notify and where” (Cisneros 2). Marin couldn’t shake Geraldo’s situation from her mind, she just kept pondering about the state of society and how little respect and care he got. This illustrates her worry and care for the world and how unequal it is. Additionally, “But what difference does it make? He wasn’t anything to her. He wasn’t her boyfriend or anything like that. Just another brazer who didn’t speak English. Just another wetback. You know the kind. The ones who always look ashamed. And what was she doing out at 3:00 A.M. anyway? Marin who was sent home with her coat and some aspirin. How does she explain?” (Cisneros 2) It’s told Marin was there at the hospital because of the incident, and she had taken the time out of her life to be there to answer any questions, including anything she knew about the stranger, which could’ve helped save his life if she had known. She did, however, tell everything she knew, hoping it could help, even if it was only his first name. Through constantly thinking about the situation and spending her time to answer inquiries, it’s …show more content…
“Count on Shauna. I had never met my attorney, but I recognized her from her stints as a ‘legal expert’ on talk shows and from her own Crimstein on Crime program on Court TV. On the screen Hester Crimstein was quick and cutting often left guests in tatters.” (Coben 92) Shauna provided Beck with the best of the best, no matter how much hassle or money it costs. She wants him to be okay and free, as he deserves. Shauna was actually able to do something for another while Marin wasn’t. She had given up her own savings to aid Beck the best she possibly could. Through supplying the best for her friend, Shauna is much more caring than

In “Geraldo No Last Name” the culture/country is described more accurately, and the difficulties are plainly displayed and being alone there is a very dangerous situation. By using evidence from both the book and our DEJ, I can say that the culture that the story is based on has many downs, and people living alone there do not have an extra hand to help, as Geraldo was about Marin’s age, and Marin still needs an adult. As quoted,“A hit and run, don’t you know. {...}…

She expresses this strongly in her use of language, such as when she mentions "attacks on one's form of expression" and how the "white laws and commerce and customs will rot in the deserts they're created, lie bleached." However, the formatting of the paper itself most accurately depicts her purpose which is to inform the audience of how she came to understand these languages and demonstrate what it's like to not have a language accommodation. " As long as I have to accommodate the English speakers rather than having them accommodate me, my tongue will be illegitimate." Expressing how she was punished for her language in school starts a conversation that builds discomfort in most native English speakers.…

In the short story American History by Judith Ortiz Cofer encourages us to understand our own feeling and being sensitive to the situation around us before we act. Cofer supports her claim by describing Elena’s insensitivity to the president’s death visiting Eugene while everyone was still mourning. Eugene’s Mother assumes that Elena, her family, or Puerto rico immigrants in general are insensitive to the tragedy. “I don’t know how you people do it,” pg 301 Eugene’s mother also doesn’t understand immigrants and believes herself superior to both Elena and people who are similar to Elena, she believes that she is not sorrowful enough about president Kennedy’s death to want to study with her son. However she doesn’t understand Elena’s feelings of simply wanted to spend time with Eugene, whom she liked and could connect to.” In the same was Elena also fails to understand the situation around her. The author uses dialogue as her mother warns her “you are heading towards humiliation and pain” pg 300. Unlike Elena, her mother understands the situation around her knowing that Eugenes mother won’t be happy that Elena want to study with her son. The author encourages to understand people feelings around us in order that we can be sensitive to them, which will prevent “humiliation and pain.” The speaker in this short story is an innocent young girl called “skinny bones” who goes through hardships and trouble at school. She lives in the crowded el building that houses immigrants from Puerto Rico like herself. Her tone can be described as unhappy and uncontent with her life “I hated my skinny flat-chested body, and I envied the black girls who could jump rope so fast their legs became blurs. The author writes with a serious tone as she portray the hardship immigrant children faces during this time period. Judith Cofer writes for other young adult who are also developing through hard times, portrayed Puerto Rico – American immigrant life and the…
