Gerard Jones Violent Media Is Good For Kids Summary
In “Violent Media Is Good For Kids,” Gerard Jones takes his position on how the comic books violence has led him to further develop as a person and inspire his career as a writer. In fact, he talked about how the Hulk led him out of passivity and loneliness as a young kid. But this is only about one person and not everybody else. Nobody is the same in this world. Many of Jones acknowledgements in this story come from self-accomplishments through reading comics and violent media that has led his path to success. He states how he “followed the Hulk to make new friends in the geek world.” This statement can emphasize on how he had things in common with other people at his school and allowed him to be outspoken. But he argues that “it’s helped hundreds of people for everyone its hurt.” This is a major difference between the two but this is not proven it’s only his thoughts. Jones also states how modern kids “grow up to passive, too distrustful of themselves, too easily manipulated.” This statement can’t be directed toward every kid. The society is changing in many ways and these kids seem to becoming more outspoken and unstable from these medias. Another part of supporting evidence for Jones is a Psychologist named Melanie Moore. She states that “children need violent entertainment in order to explore the inescapable feelings that they’ve been taught to deny, and to reintegrate those feelings into a more whole, more complex, more resilient selfhood.” Many kids in this society bring out these feelings and use them in a negative way. Not every kid is the same and some kids would not be able to bring these feelings of rage to a complex selfhood and would instead use them to harm
somebody.
Jones also brings his sons story into the media story to prove his point. He talks about how his son was scared to climb this tree with his friends. Then his dad read him the Tarzan Comics which was a fantasy based on a tree climber. Then his son got enough courage to climb the tree the next week. But what if you put this in a much bigger perspective? What if he was scared to shoot up his school with his friends? Then he read a comic book involving a super hero able to kill all these people. Then would the kid gain the courage to take part in this? It’s hard to know if the kid was stable or not. This goes back to how every kid is different and thinks differently. These media violence comics may have led Jones down the path of success and helped many kids out of their loneliness. But he fails to talk about how this has helped somebody other than a kid that turned out to become a writer or poet. It’s hard to know how these things can affect a kid that is not shy or quiet already because he did not discuss that side of kids.
