A barrier that I feel that HR professionals face in their efforts to be viewed as true business partners is that we do not directly hold a position in which is viewed as profit earning for the company. HR professionals are just viewed as people who take care of the employees. If there is a position to be filled, someone’s paycheck or benefits are not correct then a HR Professional is useful. However, it goes beyond just those things The HR team needs to get in right from the stage of defining the business strategy to Resourcing, Recruiting the right talent, Retaining the talent, Retraining and Restructuring (Venkatesh, 2009).’
One thing that a HR professional can do to position him or herself as a business partner is to make themselves more valuable to the company. A way that I would suggest to do that is to look at taking courses in industrial and organizational psychology or lean six sigma. With these courses, you will be looking at the different personalities in the work environment and how they fit together. They will be studying which personality works best with the other in order to increase production. This will be valuable information for the managers as they can move their personnel around based on the suggestions in order to create a more productive work environment. When you create a more productive work environment, you create a more profitable one. With the lean six sigma, training you can help the company identify waste, trim the excess and save money.
There is a need for a HR professional to have a place at the table because as stated before we provide a service every step of the way by using the five R’s, which are Resourcing, Recruiting, Retaining, and Restructuring. If the company plans on expanding their business, or taking on a new venture they will need us to perform the five R’s for the business. The HR department is indirectly responsible for making profits for the company
