Giant Pandas
G) Diversity of characteristics within the group:

• Ailuropoda melanoleuca (Giant Panda):
- have 5 fingers and 1 thumb which helps them tear and handle bamboo
- is the only genus in family Ursidae that has pupils that are vertical slits (others have round pupils)
- has the largest molar teeth of any carnivore which helps them to easily crush bamboo stem - tail is like a brush allowing them to mark territory with scent
• Ursus maritimus (Polar Bear):
- has large paws compared to body acting like snowshoes
- toes are thick and curved which are used for grasping prey and for having grip when running or climbing on ice. - has a large muzzle, neck, and an oblong head compared to other bears
- has 42 teeth, which are used for catching food

This phylogenetic tree shows that polar bears are closely related to brown bears as they have the most recent common ancestor. This diagram also shows that giant pandas have only one common ancestor. By looking at this diagram, we can also tell that the American black bears are more closely related to polar bears than to giant pandas.

I) Ecological Niches of the Group:

Panda bears play a key role in bamboo forests as they spread seeds by eating bamboo, helping with the growth of vegetation. By doing this, panda bears are able to maintain its bamboo forest and species in the ecosystem are able to benefit from the vegetation. For example: rabbits, deer, and various types of birds.

Polar bears play an important role in the marine environment as they are able to control the population in its ecosystem. These polar bears are at the top of the food chain in the marine environment which means that they have no predators. They are responsible for killing various species in its environment to obtain the necessary nutrients needed. A few of these species include; seals, muskox, reindeer, fishes, and small arctic rodents. Other species in this ecosystem are dependent by this, as it allows them to live a longer. This is because the population of its predators have been minimized as they were killed by polar

Polar bears are extreamly well adapted tohunt their prey under water. Keeping warm is no problem for polar bears infact sometimes polar bears have to lay flat on their stomachs on the ice just to cool of. Polar bears have the thickest fur of any bear species. Their fur has two layers. The first layer, the under coat, is the closest to their body it consists of thick, plush, hair that retains heat. The next layer, the outer layer, is a layer made of "guard hairs" and are not actually hair at all they are hollow tubes. the tubes trap air for insulation andalso reflect a visible wavelengths of light in their hollow air space, which combine to make the fur whiteeven though it is in fact colorless. The white coloring provides camoflauge for the bears allowing them to blend in with there white snowy surroundings. Under their fur polar bears have black skin that absorb the sunlight and under that they have a 4-inch layer of blubber. This blubber keeps polar bears warm in the cold water. Polar bears have fur at he bottom of their feet providing extra warmth and traction to the ice. they are adapted to swim 60 miles without a pause to rest. They have have the ability to reduce their metabolic rate when the food is scarce and again when it's…

Some interesting facts about the polar bear is that they can live up to 30 years. The polar bear is a carnivore. The average amount of cubs a polar bear produces per litter is 2. Really the only predator to the polar bear is humans. For instance when we drive cars the exhaust go to the north pole and heats it up a little and melts the ice trapping and killing the bears.…

The most recent change was the molar teeth. With this change the polar bear now has forty-two teeth that are much longer and larger than the regular brown bear which have flat rounded teeth. The interbreeding of grizzle bears and polar bears has created a new type of bear. Polar bears and grizzly bears are breading at an increased frequency due to global warming, which is slowly forcing the polar bears out their natural environment. This cross breading has been increasing as more brown bears have been spotted in polar bear territory and parts of Canada, the traits of this new hybrid bear consist of long dirty white fur, long claws, wider teeth, and a slightly larger head. In addition, this new hybrid demonstrates more similar behavior to polar bears than grizzle…

The human impact on today’s enlivenment for polar bears isn’t the best. Polar bears are finding harder to service with ice melting earlier in the spring and refreezing later in the fall. With larger oil companies moving closer into the arctic it is affecting the bears even more. Already having to deal with clement change and ice melting faster, big oil has moved in and poring toxins in to the environment. With the working of the oil rigs, oil is spilling out into the water poising the polar bears food sources. Other sea life is ingesting the oil then the polar bear eats the food and then is poising themselves. Polar bears with low health are not able to mate and have cubs, if the bears do have cubs the cubs die at an early age do to the lack…

    Why Do Bears Survive

Bears have very good adaptations that have helped them survive for years. The first adaptation the bear has that is very useful is hibernation. Hibernation is what helps the bears get through winter because food is hard to find. The second adaptation is the fact is that their skin under their fur is very thick so that way they can't feel the bees sting them when they try and get honey. The third adaptation is their claws, their claws help them dig dens and help catch fish or defend their…

    Keystone Species

Keystone species are extremely important in ecosystems across the world. They help control things like population, abiotic and biotic life, and impacts on human life. Keystone species essentially control the functions of the environment they live in, and provide positive and negative effects. In class, we studied the effect that wolves had on the environment of Yellowstone National Park. Now, I introduce Grizzly Bears and Beavers as my two examples of a Keystone Species. Beavers completely change their respective ecosystems because they build dams, which then creates wetlands, in order to catch prey and build shelters. Grizzly Bears help to regulate populations of prey and provide surrounding areas with valuable nutrients. Both of these species impact their respective ecosystems in similar and different ways.…

There is a problem with the climate in the Arctic zone and how it has been causing the population of the Polar Bears to drop. There are organizations around the world helping the Polar Bears survive. Polar Bears have been endangered for ten years now and without organizations such as the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), the Polar Bear’s survival rate will drop drastically. The survival of the Polar Bears rely on the WWF organization’s Margaret Williams, the managing director for the Arctic program for the WWF, is an expert when it comes to the preventions for the Polar Bears. She is quoted saying, “We need to change course if we want to stop further habitat loss and ensure resilient wildlife populations both in the arctic and around the world,” (Margaret Williams).…

    Predator-Prey Interaction

    • 3361 Words
    • 14 Pages

Predator-prey relationships are a common interaction found in every type of ecosystems and communities. A predator is an organism that kills for their food. They must kill in order to survive. The prey is the organism being killed for food. Predation is an interaction where it is a +/- interaction. This could be related to animals killing animals, but the same concept is in other interactions such as bear eating berries or other insects eating leaves. If the predator doesn’t eat, it dies. Throughout the years, with evolution, animals have adapted to become better predators and prey has become harder targets. Predator-prey relationships are unstable. I will explain more about this throughout this essay in different species in different types of ecosystems, and the impacts of this type of interaction.…
