Gift Of The Magi Sacrifice

Feelings are what make humans living things, love makes people stronger, happiness is the true feeling of what it means to live, and making sacrifice can sometimes cause both of these feelings. O. Henry author of the short story “The Gift of the Magi” puts in a very important theme into this story. The theme is centered around the main characters Della and Jim. In this story both of the characters are faced with an important choice to make. Henry tells a theme through irony and the characters’ actions, that shows that it’s important to make sacrifices for love and happiness and there are many ways to prove this theme throughout the story. Firstly, In the story “The Gift of The Magi” both of the main characters Della and Jim make a sacrifice for love. This sacrifice is giving up their most prized possessions to be able to buy to other one a Christmas gift. Jims states “I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.” Della states “It’s sold, I tell you—sold and gone too. Be good to me, for it went for you”. Jim sold the most valuable item that he owned to make Della happy. Della also sold her most prized possession for Jim. They both made a sacrifice to make the other one happy, which is something all people should do. Della and Jim are poor and that was all that they could do to get the money
Even though they couldn’t use the gifts that the other one had bought for them, they still loved each other. “I don’t think there’s anything in the way of a haircut that could make me like my girl any less.” Jims states this when he finds out Della sold her hair for him. The irony in this quote is that Della sold her hair to buy him the chain for his watch, while he sold his watch to get her the combs she wanted.
