The story follows the wife Della throughout the day as she tries to find a way to get money so she can buy her husband Jim a Christmas gift. Throughout the story there are a lot of themes that are shown through Della and Jim’s actions. The three most important themes found in this story are sacrifice, love and pride. Sacrifice, love and pride are all shown by Jim and Della throughout the story as they both try to find a way to get money for each other’s gift and as they sell their prized possession.

In the first paragraph of the story it states that Della only had one dollar and eighty-seven cents that she had gotten by begging the vegetable man and the butcher for money. Della had to put her pride aside and beg others for money so that she could buy Jim a present. By going and begging for money she showed that she didn’t care what other people thought about her begging or her financial situation at the time, she only cared about getting Jim’s present. But, that’s not the only time in the story when Della has to put her pride aside to get Jim’s gift. When Della sells her hair to Madame Sofronie she has to put her pride aside and get her beautiful hair cut for money for Jim’s gift. Jim, on the other hand put his pride aside and sold his watch that was a very meaningful item to him just so he could get money for Della’s comb set. Both characters put their pride aside to make the other happy, no matter how much they probably thought about that possession after they sold it, what mattered most was buying a gift for the other. Love, another important theme is also shown a lot in the story by Jim and

The Gift of the Magi shows many ironic aspects. How Della adores her hair, thinking so highly that no queen jewels could ever match the beauty of her hair. Or how Jim thinks his watch is so priceless that no king could ever have such a jewel, but when wanting to show their affection to one another they sell their priceless jewels just to find out that they each sold their priceless jewels to get something for one another. One a comb for the now missing hair, the other a golden chain for the now sold watch.…

In the short story, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, irony is used to make the reader expect something to happen but the opposite happens. For example, Della had bought Jim a fob using the money she got for selling her beloved and prized hair. When she showed him his present he said, "I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs." (306) This shows that they both had sacrificed the things they had been most prideful of just so that their partner could be happy, which was nice by foolish. It was unexpected to them that the the other would sacrifice their favorite thing, making the gifts useless because they were not able to use them. In addition, the name Dillingham from Mr. James Dillingham Young…

This is what leads us to the major conflict of the short story. Though in a more traditional style, a story will introduce you to a situation and will then carry out events that eventually lead to a major conflict. Instead, in O. Henry 's unorthodox style of telling his story, the narrator puts the reader in the midst of an issue that must be resolved. It is said that the hardscrabble couple have only two things that are considered of any high value; Jim 's gold watch and Della 's luscious locks of hair, or “cascade of brown waters” (185) as her hair is referred to. With this in mind, Della decides, after lengthy tearful contemplation, that she must sell her hair and risk her beauty in exchange for the money to buy Jim 's gift. Though this decision has led to the solution of the original situation at hand of how Della will find money for her gift, it has ultimately led to the most considerable conflict of the story that is the question of whether or not Jim will appreciate her gift, or be upset at the cost of the gift.…

They both decided to sell what was valuable to them to purchase one another something. In the story it told how Della sold her hair to purchase Jim a chain for his watch. And the writer had symbolized her hair as it was so gorgeous it would inspire the Queen of Sheba. The symbol that was noted with Jim’s watch was told as it would envy the King of Solomon. To us as readers, Della’s hair and Jim’s watch may have just been material items. But to them these items held value and memory that they cherished for as long as they remember. The symbols help the reader to develop a sense of feeling of the love that these two had for one another. A love so strong that they would sacrifice their most valued possessions and give them up for one another without even thinking twice. It forms a paradox in the reader’s mind that there is more to Christmas than just giving. It’s the thoughts and ideas behind the reasoning of why we as humans want to be so giving. It reminds the reader that the most…

Both Della and her husband Jim, both had been saving up their money to buy each other Christmas presents. Neither of them had quite enough. Della, had sold her hair, whereas Jim, had sold his watch. Towards the end of the story, there is an example of foreshadowing. “The magi brought valuable gifts that was not among them. This dark assertion will be illuminated later on.” This gives you an idea that something is going to happen When Jim had come home, he realized what she had done. He began to tell her that her Christmas present was a set of combs and they now could not be put to much use for a while. Della, had gotten him a chain for his watch which he had sold. “Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the magi.” This quote shows that even though their gifts are of no use right now, being with each other is a good enough gift over all. At first they were both disappointed, but then realized that gifts are not what matter but having each…
