Gilgamesh.Enkidu said to Gilgamesh, “You who have walked beside me, steadfast through so many dangers, remember me, never forget what I have endured” (149). He takes care of him because he is selflessness and he wants to out other people before himself. Enkidu dies for Gilgamesh and that is also what makes him a great friend, he put himself before his best friend and that really helped him because the more heroic character in this story.
I believe that Enkidu is the more heroic character in this story because he is overall a better guy. Enkidu helped Gilgamesh because Gilgamesh is his best friend. He knew that being a friend was very important but I think he went over the edge helping Gilgamesh kill Humbaba. The reason I chose Enkidu over Gilgamesh was that reason right there. Gilgamesh had no right to kill Humbaba he just felt like he had more power over him and he knew he could kill him if he tried. There was no need for killing Humbaba but Gilgamesh felt like it would be a good idea, Enkidu didn’t. Another example of why Enkidu is more Heroic is because he is not selfish and he cares about other people more than himself. In my mind, that means the most and that is what identifies a hero. Gilgamesh talking about Enkidu, “Enkidu, dearest brother, you came to Uruk from the wilderness, your mother was a gazelle, your father a wild ass, you were raised on the milk of antelope and deer, and the wandering herds taught you where the best pastures were” (151). This tells you where Enkidu came from and it kinda tells you why he is the man he is. Enkidu is a great example of a heroic character because he stays by Gilgamesh’s side the whole time.
For example, he went with Gilgamesh to fight the crazy beast, Humbaba. They knew they could take out Humbaba but Gilgamesh still wanted his best friend by his side. Enkidu encouraged Gilgamesh by saying, “Two intimate friends cannot be defeated. Be courageous. Remember how strong you are. I will stand by you. Now let us attack” (124).Enkidu didn’t leave Gilgamesh until he was forced to. I have respect for Enkidu because he did whatever it took to make Gilgamesh happy. As Enkidu being the static character in this story, he died to save his best friend. The Gods were furious when they heard Gilgamesh and Enkidu killed Humbaba and the The Bull of Heaven. They did not like that, so then Enkidu took the blame for the kill and that is what ended Enkidu’s life. I think that it is very fortunate for Gilgamesh when Enkidu did that. That is what makes a hero, a
hero. Enkidu was the most heroic character in this story. The moral of the story, was that Enkidu helped out Gilgamesh after his mistakes, he helped him become a better person, and he also helped Gilgamesh kill a person he hated. That is not easy to do and that is why I think Enkidu is the more heroic character in this story.
