Girl By Jamaica Kincaid Analysis
My favorite piece of literature is a short story called Girl by Jamaica Kincaid. This short story is unique in several different ways. First of all, the whole story is just one, grammatically correct sentence. The author utilizes semicolons to separate each of her compelling phrases. Also, the whole story consists of the mother giving advice to her daughter with the exception of two times when the daughter interjects to protest what was said. Secondly, the risqué language that she occasionally uses only adds power to the point that she’s making. The messages in this story are the standards women are supposed to meet in her life. Some of the topics the author brings up are cooking, household chores, friendships, relationships, etc. My favorite
part of this book is the conclusion. In one of the phrases, the mother instructs her daughter to always squeeze the bread prior to buying it. The daughter asks, “but what if the baker won’t let me feel the bread?” Her mother then answers, “you mean to say that after all you are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won’t let near the bread?” This is my favorite piece of literature because it’s candid and it’s an accurate representation of what women around the world go through.
