Giving and Christmas
Honors English
December Essay

For people today, Christmas is supposed to be a time of year when everyone can celebrate family, love, kindness, and peace. Christmas, though, has become more of a commercial holiday where everyone thinks about how much they can receive for the holidays. Christmas now-a-days has become about “what can someone buy me” instead of “what can I give my loved one”. Not everyone is able to afford a million presents for their children, and the fact that spoiled children get so much does not help that situation. To help these unfortunate families at Christmas, I would donate to a charity, assist children in present buying, and volunteer at a soup kitchen. First and foremost to give back to the needy, I would donate money to a charity. I wouldn’t just donate during the Christmas season, though. To truly help them, I would donate as much as I could throughout the year. However, I would have to know where exactly the money was to be dispersed. If money is given directly to the needy family, I would not want to give my money to that charity. I want to offer my money to a charity that will make sure the money goes to something that improves the lives of the deprived as a whole. Examples of what I would consider good use my donation would be building schools and colleges where the children and adolescents can go for free or starting a training program for the adults who find it hard to get or keep a job. If I could, I would gladly give a million dollars towards the welfare of the less fortunate than I. Secondly, I would show kids the joy of giving by taking out children who are members of a poor family to buy presents for their other family members. This helps kids to realize that Christmas is not all about receiving gifts; it is more about giving

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

Donating money or time to charity is a good way to help ourselves feel better by improving the quality of life for other people. One of my favorite charities is The Shriners Hospital for children. They are a charitable organization, and their 22 hospitals are completely free to patients. According to their website, their vision is to “Become the best at transforming children’s lives by providing exceptional healthcare through innovative research, in a patient and family centered environment.” They are dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in need through medical and financial backing (Shriners Hospitals for Children).…

    Christmas vs Thanksgiving

Christmas is a kid’s favorite holidays for really only one reason: presents. We live in a society where materialistic things outweigh almost anything else. We would do almost anything to get the new iPhone, and we have an annual “buy as much as you can” day, also known as Black Friday. Christmas, unfortunately, has gone away from its religious origins and has been turned into the most expensive holiday of the year. Although I am sitting here trashing Christmas, I do still enjoy the snow and the decorations; who doesn’t? Snow sets the stage for Santa, and decorations make it all the merrier. Twinkling lights accompany almost every roof and dance in the cold winter gusts. The weather and feel of Christmas couldn’t be more perfect for the holiday; cold keeps us in the house and makes the fire feel all the more wonderful, while sugary treats and presents make our tummies and shelves feel good. Unfortunately for Christmas, my love for the day has diminished. I have grown up to see how selfish our society is during this time of year and now different we treat the holiday than it is actually supposed…

Towards the beginning of the school year I took a trip to Greencastle Walmart with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and participated in our local program of handing out fifty $25 Walmart gift cards to families who looked as if they could use some help purchasing school supplies for their kids. We walked around to see different families at the checkouts and asked if we could help pay for their bill. We told them we were with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and received an anonymous donation to help families for school supplies and would like to bless their family. It felt very rewarding to help out families in our own community. Helping to fulfill fifty families needs in one night is something that I will never forget. It has…

    A Christmas Memory

The method of concluding traits about a character is known as characterization, and it is when an author lets readers know any kind of information regarding the characters in a story. The two types of characterization are direct and indirect. Direct characterization occurs when an author directly states a trait of a character. Indirect, on the other hand, is used when the author shows a character 's trait through their actions, thoughts and speech, appearance, or that of another character. Truman Capote 's short story "A Christmas Memory", is about a young boy, referred to as "Buddy," and his best friend, or older cousin, who is unnamed in the story. As a tradition, the two friends bake fruitcakes and send the baked goods to acquaintances they have met only once or twice, and to people they have never met at all. They live in a house with other relatives, who are authoritative and stern, and have a dog named Queenie. As the two try to make the best of their Christmas, complications occur and Buddy is sent off to military school, thus making it their last Christmas together. Buddy 's friend would be characterized as: childish, kind, and religious.…

People have many opinions and reasons about their favorite holidays, but out of all the holidays I would think that Christmas is the best above all. The other reason is because of the foods, but the best part of Christmas is spending time with the family.…
