Part 1 - Kaplan 's Goal and Rationale in Adopting TPSDr. Gary Kaplan very much believed in the corporate culture of Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC) and in the case study states that it was the collaborative team approach that attracted him to VMMC. However, when he took over as CEO in 2000, the medical center was losing money for its first time in history. Kaplan had to move VMMC to become a learning organization that could be lean, and compete within a very competitive industry during a period of poor economic conditions. Transforming any organization is a formidable task and in VMMC 's situation, there were two major impediments. First, VMCC had well entrenched practices of doing things the way they have always been done referred to as "routines".1 From the heuristic perspective, the routines and minor incremental changes to the routines had worked well for the VMMC through the years with the physicians retaining their sense of entitlement and autonomy without much involvement in setting organizational goals and little requirement to work for the greater good rather than themselves. However, now there was a change in the economic and competitive environment that required a new business model that could adapt to its environment. Second, VMMC was a large facility and large organizations can be slow to change and become learning organizations. The technological environment in health care had changed rapidly and Kaplan recognized that VMMC had become inefficient. For example, improvements were needed in overall layout of the facility 's treatment areas and in vital services as lab and pharmacy. The simulation wasn’t as intuitive as I thought at first; it took three tries and 20 steps in order to get the 61% buy in order to complete the simulation. There was one steps taken that gave a 0 or neutral buy, basically a waste of money and time. I quickly evaluated that in order to start a change process and achieve the buy in and support, activities need to be done in a certain order. I think the simulation does take into account the perceived human emotions surrounding change, however, it only takes into account the desired reaction to the change, obviously real life is a little more complex to determine. The same approach can be taken nonetheless, in using the Mckinsey 7-S model on the Global Tech simulation, the plan according to the strategy, structure, systems, skills and shared values and beliefs helped in the organizational change. First, concerning the strategy, the leader has been reactive and changed the strategy by adding the commercial sector to the company’s market focus beside the military sector. Second, concerning the structure, hiring new employees to the organization in different departments to be responsible of the new market segments has modified the company structure, but the organization continued to be only hierarchical. Therefore, during the implementation to have a cross-functional team with diversified experiences on the same table for adding value to the new strategy. As the CEO of an organization, one must make large-scale decisions on a regular basis in order to promote company growth, keep the employees happy, and achieve success. In this simulation assignment I was the CEO of Spectrum Sunglass Company, a company that provides its customers with high quality sunglasses. The future was looking bright because the market was growing, there was no pressure from competitive pricing, and people were being rehired after the recession. Spectrum had the opportunity to focus its efforts on creating new eyewear from more sustainable resources. If implemented correctly, Spectrum would be able to continue business with its largest account, BigMart, which constitutes for 30% of its revenue. However, not all members of the company were on board with the new idea. They believed that the company should focus its efforts towards getting back on their feet after the recession and not on implementing a new sustainability project.
