Global Virtual Teams: Literature Review
This literature review is a summary which is comparing the effectiveness of global virtual teams and their means of communicating versus the effectiveness of face-to-face communication in non-global virtual teams. In doing so it will also serve to provide a basic understanding of the importance of communication within teams as well as what global virtual teams are. Previously written journals in this field of study will be consulted to add depth and validity to the topic of discussion. The strength and weaknesses of communication in global virtual teams as well as the role that trust and social loafing may play in cohesive teamwork will also be referred to.

Language barriers limit the regularity of efforts to communication in global virtual teams which also then limits the sharing of knowledge within these groups (Klitmøller & Lauring, 2013; Maznevski & Chudoba, 2000). Geographic barriers also tend to promote social loafing and decrease the commitment individuals have to their teams as they have no authority figure watching over them and monitoring their daily productivity levels (Jarvenpaa & Leidner, 1999). Studies performed by Kelley (2011) show that face-to-face interaction promotes trust amongst team members which aids in the cohesiveness and future success of the team as well as the organization. A lack of trust amongst virtual team members hinders their ability to solve their disagreements in a civil yet timely manner as not to interfere with their tasks as a team including causing dissatisfaction amongst team members in virtual teams with one another across the globe. A lack of trust leads to a lack of fellowship in virtual teams resulting in ineffective communication practices as stated by Kirkman, Rosen, Gibson, Tesluk & McPherson

    Darlene DeRosa conducted a study to uncover potential obstacles, competencies and challenges that may occur when dealing with virtual teams. During the study, the teams “were assessed on six dimensions of virtual team performance: results, communication, team motivation, interpersonal relationships, collaboration, and purpose and roles” (DeRosa, 2009, p. 9). The study uncovered that effective leadership will ultimately determine the success of the virtual teams (DeRosa, 2009). In addition, the assessment uncovered that communication in a virtual team is also very important probably the most important aspect of building an effective virtual team.     In today's competitive world, companies are gradually vacating their cubicles and enter into the virtual workforce to increase work efficiency, reduce cost and resolve organizational problems (Ahmed & Ebrahim, 2009). Nowadays, companies are investing a bulk amount of money on virtual teams to enhance their performance since it has become an indispensable prerequisite for companies to stay in competitive in the era of globalization (Ahmed & Ebrahim, 2009). Virtual teams consist of members from different cultural backgrounds who work in various organizations with different set of standards and members of the virtual teams have the least probability to meet in person (Nelson & Quick, 2013, p. 348). The greater percentages (approximately 90%) of people are responsible for both success and failure of the virtual teams whereas technology plays only 10% role (Nelson & Quick, 2013, p. 348). Communication effectiveness and stimulating work are considered two essential human factors in terms of shaping the success and failure of virtual teams (Nelson & Quick, 2013, p. 348). The task can be challenging and stimulating for virtual teams as it is often unsubstantiated and consequently team member's lack of concern on their work might turn into crumble (Nelson & Quick, 2013, p. 348). Volvo has emerged to make the communication system as much effective as possible through emphasizing the concern of communication effectiveness and stimulating work (Nelson & Quick, 2013, p. 348). Volvo assesses the efficiency of virtual teams into four different types which is depicted in a question pattern in the case (Nelson & Quick, 2013, p. 348).
