Everest report
This report provides an in-depth analysis of the two Everest Simulations conducted by Group 10 of MGMT1001 Thursday Tutorial. This task required students to form teams consisting of five to six members whose goals were to summit Mount Everest. While it provided us with a rich experience in team dynamics and collaboration, it also enabled us to explore key managerial concepts taught in the course, consisting of:
• Communication
• Groups and Teams
Leadership
In this report, we examine the effectiveness of Face to Face Communication (FTFC) versus Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), and the problems encountered through the utilisation of the virtual medium including efficiency of the feedback system, loss of personal focus and other emergent issues. It includes personal reflections on attitudes and perceptions, as well as group performance and strategies adopted in the second Simulation in order to create a more positive team experience. Theories which relate to interpersonal communication have also been integrated in the report to illustrate its relation to certain situations encountered during the Simulation.
Additionally, we provide a multifaceted analysis on the notion of team cohesiveness and how it attributes to better performance outcomes. An overview on the different intragroup conflicts encountered in the Simulation has been included, examining the positive and negative impact that conflict had on team experience and performance, and how mutual agreements were reached through the compromising of personal and team goals.
Finally, we conclude the report with an analysis of the different leadership styles including directive and empowerment. In our case, a consensus system was agreed upon, which granted equal authority for decision-making. The report also includes a copy of the team contract which briefly outlines our approach to problems and policies for decision-making.

The Mount Everest Leadership and teamwork simulation is a simulation series which consist of five to six team members where each of them has different personal goals. The team members each play a different role in the simulation. The team consists of a leader, environmentalist, photographer, marathoner and physician. The simulation commence at base camp where six days are given to reach the summit. During the six days there are goals for different members to achieve such as reaching the summit and avoiding rescue. At each camp, team members will analyze information such as the weather, hiking speed, health conditions and goals. Furthermore information will be given in each round to team members to assist them in making decisions. In addition team members will have to decide effectively whether to proceed to next camp due to weather issue and how much oxygen cylinder each member should hold as it affects their hiking speed. These decisions influence the team performance and therefore affecting the overall team goal points. Communication in this report refers to the transfer of information from one party…

In the last few weeks, I and my group members did two Everest stimulations in order to achieve our personal goals as well as common goals to reach the summit. This report will analyses the main findings of the stimulations in three key element, communication, groups and teams, leadership. We split the stimulations into two kinds of communicative ways, face-to-face and electronic communication. In the first stimulation, I achieved 57% of personal goals and the whole team achieved 56% of common goals and it was found that face-to-face communication was an effective and efficient way of communicating in person and the importance of all group members work together as a team to reach higher points and lastly the vary of leadership method. In the second stimulation, I achieved 80% of personal goals and the whole team achieved 41% of the common goals. We were quite not satisfied with this result because of a poor communication due to electronic issues such as internet connection problems and lots conflict experienced due to the method of communication, however the team leader performance was satisfied as the leader made decisions in time.…

Darlene DeRosa conducted a study to uncover potential obstacles, competencies and challenges that may occur when dealing with virtual teams. During the study, the teams “were assessed on six dimensions of virtual team performance: results, communication, team motivation, interpersonal relationships, collaboration, and purpose and roles” (DeRosa, 2009, p. 9). The study uncovered that effective leadership will ultimately determine the success of the virtual teams (DeRosa, 2009). In addition, the assessment uncovered that communication in a virtual team is also very important probably the most important aspect of building an effective virtual team. DeRosa (2009) explains that effective team leaders should ensure that all goals are clearly communicated to ensure the teams’ success.…

The main thing I learned through this simulation is that communication, collaboration, and teamwork is very important in being successful. For example, from the start, our team members communicated what each of their personal goals were and how many points that we got from accomplishing each of them. We collaborated on what our next move would be when it came to figuring out whether or not we would stay at the same camp or advance. Teamwork was key because if we weren’t together and just tried to work on our own agendas, then we would have never made it to the top successfully. When a new challenge came, we tackled it as a team and not individually. We were much stronger working together rather than working against each other. In the end, working together really paid off for us.…

In retrospect as a team we failed to properly communicate on the mountain. This simulation was useful in terms of learning how each member functions and communicates in a group setting. I personally am a visual learner and prefer to visualize my tasks and problems before attacking each one. In this simulation, as a group we only communicated information, which lead to information getting lost. To be able to display information would prove beneficial in making decisions. I would like to take the time in thanking you for providing this simulation and taking the time to read my analysis of my…

Even with the best project planning, scheduling and budgeting, without superior communication a project can fail. The simulation also brought to light the need for extraordinary communication skills. The project simulation laid out some important issues around team dynamics and communication. It made it even more important as this project was also across many different cultural teams. Handling conflict in project management is an area that not only takes effort but experience. I will need to focus on these concepts to help develop a more professionally mature approach to dealing with conflicts within project…
