I went to the ranch for a weekend to sit down with my Grandad. I probably could tell these stories from memory but wanted to hear him tell them one more time. He is 88 and we may not have too many years left. I talked to him about this class and what I am learning. We talked about how different the world was when he was my age and then how things might have been different if they were. I asked him about Laura. Most of what I know is stories from other people. My Grandad is not very emotional, he really just says it …show more content…
The occurrences in his life have ranged from joyous to devastation. How he has walked thru life in spite of them is a testament to how life is much bigger than just our circumstances. His calm demeanor, although possibly born out of tragedy, is a strength that very few possess. His support of his family is unrelenting and although he has difficulty with communication, his actions speak louder than words. He lost two wives, one to death and one to divorce, but is now happily married at 88. He was a pilot, built interstates and was an avid skier and golfer. From the time that Asian spices hit the European scene to the ability to Skype from opposite sides of the world the impact that information and access provide is unequalled.
My grandad tells stories about his tenure in California during World War II. He says that the orange groves were so numerous that when he flew his plane, he could smell them for miles. He talks about some of his commanders and subordinates and the adventures they had. What he doesn’t talk about is when his first wife passed away. The lack of communication not only across country, but within the military caused it to take 2 weeks for him to find out and get back to Texas. When he does talk about it, he does it very matter of factly, though I wonder, if at the time, he feels like we do when we miss an important phone call, but worse. The exploration of space created the satellite communication systems that we utilized today and has changed the world drastically within my grandad’s
