Functionalist
Define-Education having intended functions and fixed objectives such as socializing the young or teaching academic skills.
Socialization-Traditionally taught at home, however the industrial revolution, parents leaving the home & child labor laws barring children from factories, public schools became where one learned society norms, attitudes & behaviors.
Cultural transmission-“Major portions of society’s knowledge are passed down from one generation to the other”. A process of transmitting specific parts of a culture will be transmitted in curriculum i.e. African-American studies, women’s studies & bilingual ed.
Academic Function-teaching children the skills they will need in today’s society.
Innovation- encouragement of creativity & independence to explore technical & scientific knowledge
Child care-Since WWII, mothers entered work force, children needed care & provide one nutritious meal a day.
Delay into job market-college entry delays the entry into the work force & decreases unemployment rates.
Conflict
Define-Society is conflict vs. cooperation. Competition, power & dominance in education, the goal to maintain order & control, Society’s needs being met through a strategized educational system.
Social control-Official (academic) & Social (hidden curriculum) Students conform or receive consequences. Mastery of social queues.
Screening & allocation (tracking)-multiple factors used, ethnic, socioeconomic, residence, ability. Public vs. private schools. 1st through 12th grades classification of fast, average & slow
Credentialed society-Degrees & certifications become the standard of entering a specific job market. A measure of one’s adherence rather than knowledge. Colleges & universities are mini societies where one can function within a sect.
