Globe

Globe is a three-dimensional scale model of Earth (terrestrial globe or geographical globe) or other spheroid celestial body such as a planet, star, or moon. Some terrestrial globes include relief to show mountains and other features on the Earth`s surface. The word "globe" comes from the Latin word globus, meaning round mass or sphere. It may also refer to a spherical representation of the celestial sphere, showing the apparent positions of the stars and constellations in the sky (celestial globe). A globe is the only representation of the earth that does not distort either the shape or the size of large features. A typical scale for a terrestrial globe is roughly 1:40 million. This corresponds to a globe with a circumference of one metre, since the circumference of the real Earth is close to 40 million metres. Celestial globes show the apparent positions of the stars in the sky. They omit the Sun, Moon and planets because the positions of these bodies vary relative to those of the stars, but the ecliptic, along which the Sun moves, is indicated. Globes are round maps of the earth that are designed with vertical and horizontal lines. These imaginary lines, including the equator and the prime meridian aid in finding any location on the globe. Running East and West is the equator which can be seen on the middle of the globe. From the North to the South poles is the prime meridian which is best known for running through Greenwich, England. The point at which the equator and the prime meridian intersect is called `0.` From here, numbered lines of longitude increase in 15 degree increments and run parallel to the prime meridian. Running parallel to the equator in increments of 10 degrees are latitude lines. At the intersection of these lines are locations on the globe.
