GMO's
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’S) Genetically modified organisms are living things that have had artificial changes in the genes of their DNA. Most of the time these changes are things that could never occur naturally, which is what makes it so unnatural and unusual. To genetically engineer food, it involves the insertion of genes from a living thing (such as plants, insects, animals, or humans) to create something new and unique. Almost all genetically engineered foods are not labeled, so most people don’t even know when they’re consuming them. I don’t know about you, but it sounds like a well-plotted scheme to me… Not only are GMO’S something I (along with many others) don’t agree with, but they’re also causing a variety of problems. The main thing for me is the environmental problems; when a GMO escapes into the wild, the ecosystem in which they’re living in is disrupted by the unnatural occurrences in these organisms. “For example, the most recent conservative scientific estimates indicate that genetically engineered plants will probably cross-pollinate with wild relatives, thereby escaping into the wild and permanently disrupting ecosystems at about one percent a year.” (Jack London Workshop) Not only are there environmental problems, but there are ethical problems as well. Genetically modified organisms are going against what many people believe, not only scientifically but religiously as well, just for the profit of these big businesses. On the other hand, there are also a great deal of people who think that genetically modified foods are “nothing new”, and that “our foods have been unnatural for a long time”. It is true that organisms have been modified for centuries. There were much simpler forms of genetic modification done by our ancestors; they simply chose a few plants, and gradually modified them by choosing the ones that were the largest, and best tasting. According to the article “Genetically Modified Foods Are Nothing New”, organisms

Technology has helped make much advancement but with these advancements there have been some side effects that are causing many side effects. With the use of technology we are able to get information about anything without going to the library, we are able to send a letter via the web in a matter of seconds, and doctors are able to save lives with the help of technology. This whole process of GMO is a moral and ethical question mark for each person and for each county. Ethically as a person I would say why alter what was not intended? Why defy the laws of nature?…

Many people look at GMOs with a sort of view as if to ask: Why should I eat new GMO crops, when I could eat a crop that has been around for millennia? What they don’t understand, is that there is really no such thing as a crop that scientists just altered. People have been modifying plants since the creation of agriculture twelve thousand years ago. While it may have been done differently back then, the current method of genetically modifying plants is just a more deliberate way of doing what humankind has always done. The only difference now is that people have a scientific understanding of what they are doing and have improved agricultural techniques; advancements in agriculture have moved from the farm to the lab. The reason that I think so many people are opposed to GMOs, is because they don’t understand what they are, and because they think that scientists are doing something radical in making GMOs; they fear the unknown.”(Chrisopher…

Many people know what the words Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage mean. But how often do you see someone actually live up to them? Soldiers learn these values in detail during Basic Combat Training (BCT), from then on they live them every day in everything they do — whether they’re on the job or off. In short, the Seven Core Army Values listed below are what being a Soldier is all about.…

Tyranny is an abuse of power over others by a person or government. One example is any government which has too much power and restricts the rights of its people. A different type of tyranny is when the will of the majority restricts the rights and freedoms of individuals in the minority. For example, slavery in America was developed by the white majority in the South, to assure that their economy would succeed. Tyranny of both types mentioned still exists in the world today.…

How would you feel if I told you that the food you're eating was made in a science lab? Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are the outcome of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially manipulated into the genes of an uncorrelated plant or animal. Crops are often genetically modified to be resistant to pesticides so farmers would be able to spray them without harming the crop itself. However, there are many consequences regarding consumers’ health and environmental problems. Many people question the safety of consuming genetically modified organisms. Companies should acknowledge that their product is genetically modified by placing a label on the product because customers have a right to know. Furthermore, there are several serious health complications that may rise to the consumer. And finally, genetically modifying organisms should be limited by being placed in a controlled environment to prevent contamination with other species because it can be harmful to the environment in several ways.…

Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMOs, are “living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering,” (The Non-GMO Project). While genetic engineering has the capability of being beneficial to our society, The Non-GMO Project argues that it “creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods,” (The Non-GMO Project). GMOs are very prevalent in our contemporary food industry; The Non-GMO Project website states that “in the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food,” (The Non-GMO Project). New traits are introduced to…

A 2003 poll showed that 92 percent of Americans favor labeling genetically Engineered (GE) food. Why would this food need labeled? Because it was created by transporting a gene from one organism to another, therefore making it a new organism. This action is done in animals and plants alike. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genomes have been altered to favor certain characteristics (Diaz). For many years there has been breeding done in plants so as to have the desired characteristics, such as juicier tomatoes. The United States government does not see GMOs differently from breeding. GMOs, though, are formed by scientific procedures like cloning and Recombinant DNA technology. A primary reason…

I was born and raised in a small rural town in western Kansas. I have learned hardworking values growing up on a farm. My family relies on farming and ranching as a way of life. So, when I hear people talking about how GMO’s are bad for people’s health and our environment, it makes me feel concerned about the information people are receiving. GMO’s don’t affect the health of people or the environment at all. Instead they help to improve crop yields by modifying the seeds according to where a person lives by being drought resistant or bug resistant for example. This helps farmers and ranchers such as my family to make more profit from a higher yield. This results in more food produced which can help in a world with an ever-growing population.…

Genetically Modified organisms or Gmo’s are unacceptable. People have been modifying genetics since the beginning of agriculture more than 10,000 years ago. People have been utilizing selective breeding in order to produce superior crops and animal. However, not only their are creating superior crops and animals, their harming plants and animals during the process. We have been told GM crops will feed the world, but that’s clearly not the point.…

The controversial issue of genetically modified foods, commonly known as GM’s, has only gained the attention of millions, since it became a prominent and highly debated global issue. Genetically modified foods are created when the genes of an organism are engineered and modified to create a new or enhanced version of that organism. The process of using different genes from different sources to genetically modify foods led to public outcry and sometimes, praise. People in support of genetically modified foods claims it will enhance the quality of the food, improve the food’s resistance to pests and other harmful elements, lower food costs, and also increase food security for the future. However, those opposed to genetically modified foods claim…

The long term effects are becoming more and more prevalent within our society as GMOs continue to be around longer and with more research being done the possibilities for harm increase daily. While I won’t deny the overall idea here has great potential such as potentially virus and fungi immune crops as well as drought resistant crops [2] the overall study and research on this subject is very…
