A more complex application of triangulation occurs in a global positioning system (GPS). A GPS consists of one or more earth-based receivers that accept and analyze signals sent by satellites to determine a receiver’s geographic location. GPS receivers, found in handled navigation devices and many vehicles, use triangulation to determine their location relative to at least three geostationary satellites. According to Sanders, the geostationary satellites are the fixed points in the triangulation formula (Understanding Satellites and Global Positioning Systems).…

Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” is a story about knowing your surroundings, and listening to your instincts, just as the dog in this story did. London’s human character, who is nameless in the story, is more like a foil; with the main character being the harsh landscape of the Yukon, where the story takes place amid -75 below temperatures. The man shows how arrogant and inexperienced he is when he travels to the Yukon Territory without proper clothing, the use of a sled, or companions. He has no camping gear, insufficient food supplies, and his surroundings appear insignificant to him. These vital mistakes not only cost the man anger, but eventually a slow, agonizing death due to stubbornness, and a lack of knowledge in the harsh realities…

GPS is a navigational aid that is satellite based. It is made up of a network of 24 satellites in orbit around the world. The first satellite was launched in 1978 and the last was put into orbit in 1994. Every 10 years another satellite is put into orbit because each satellite is made to last that amount of time. The system began as a military application but in the 1980's the government decided to make it available to everyone, anywhere, anytime. The system finds your…

Chapter 9: Global Information Systems Why go Global? –Customers demand integrated worldwide services. Example: shoe company. Prerequisites to the success of a global information system: -Clear understanding of factors such as customs, laws, technological issues, and local business needs and practices. Airline reservation systems- first large-scale interactive global system Global products-Products or services that have been standardized for all markets. Manufacturer might “regionalize” operations Globalization- important factor in purchasing and supply chain Global Information Systems at Rohm & Haas: Part of Dow Chemical Production units in many different countries Overhauled its global information system: By upgrading the order entry system. Installed a companywide materials management system tied in with a global demand planning system. Can now provide better service to its customers. E-business: major factor in the widespread use of global information systems. Builds on the advantages and structures of traditional business The Internet: Simplify communication. Change business relationships. Consumers can engage in comparison shopping more easily. Small companies can conduct business online just as large companies Global Information System (GIS): Information system that works across national borders. Facilitates communication between headquarters and subsidiaries in other countries. Incorporates all the technologies and applications found in a typical information system. Stores, manipulates, and transmits data across cultural and geographic boundaries. International company: can increase and enhance coordination of its subsidiaries and be able to access new global markets Strategic planning is a core function. Defined in terms of two dimensions: control and coordination Control requires: Centralized architecture for data, standardized definitions used across the organization. Standard formats for reports. Defined behaviors for different…

The purpose of this report is to decide whether the sextant is outdated and effectively useless in the modern age or whether it still has a use in modern navigation. To decide this I explored modern navigation techniques, which is mostly done by global positioning systems, I researched the way that these work and the methodology behind the use of a sextant. The conclusion that I came to was that modern day sextant use is rare unless practicing for an emergency. Since its release GPS has dominated and is now the main source of navigation on most vessels (big or small). The reason for this dominance is the reliability and effectiveness of the GPS system. So unless there is a major problem it leaves the sextant as a practically useless device aboard a ship. This means that fewer people are learning how to use a sextant and are carrying spare GPS as a backup device rather than the sextant. However the sextant has been used for centuries as it is a reliable device but takes skill and knowledge to use which is dying out of modern sailing.…
