God Made Me Who I am

Essay A
Duke Divinity School

I can remember being at a small church near Nashville North Carolina; it was in October of 1978, I went up to the altar and gave my life to the Lord. 35 years later, I am very grateful for the seeds that were sown into my life through Christian Leadership. My goal is not to allow my ego to get the best of me while accepting others differences and appreciating our unique individualities. I will make an effort to remember that no one is perfect and we all are a work in progress. One of the weak areas that I would like to work on is a tendency to over analyze situations. Often, I tend to over think things. Once I heard old men say “if you think to long, you will think wrong.” As Christians, we should have the mind of Christ.. As a Duke Divinity student in the program of Christian Arts Studies; my goals are to become more theologically inclined and more Biblically astute. I also hope to bring excellence to the program with a zeal for God and a discernment of the move of the Holy Spirit. Once I heard old men say “if you think to long, you will think wrong.” As Christians, we should have the mind of Christ. Duke Divinity School offers scholars an opportunity to reach their goals in an effort to become leaders of servitude. I count it an honor and a privilege to be considered for enrollment. Ultimately, my academic and spiritual goal is to complete the Masters of Arts Program in Christian Arts Studies and continue to build the Kingdom of God with even a greater level of understanding and a deeper revelation of the Scriptures.

Conscious of their own defects, they endeavor to improve themselves, but the absence of a guide, their need of books, and their scanty time, all prevent their making progress. These are the men whom the Pastor’s College welcomes… The College aims at training preachers rather than scholars. To develop all the faculty of ready speech, to help them understand the word of God, and to foster the spirit of consecration, courage, and confidence in God, are objects so important that we put all other matters in secondary position. If a student should learn a thousand things, and yet fail to preach the gospel acceptably, his College course will have missed its true design (Spurgeon 2011, Location 63 of…

There are different achievements I would like to accomplish in my life. For example, becoming an outstanding officer of the U.S. Army is my short-term goal. Being a leader in such an organization will be invaluable to my long-term goal, which is to run my own English academic center in Korea. And I have a firm belief that business related subjects I will obtain through the Penn State will be my guidance to reaching those goals.…

According to most of the people in the world, one of the biggest problems that we face is not the failing world economy or the growing civil unrest in the Middle East. Instead most people in the world believe that we are the main problem, before any of the other struggles that might be going on. A better way of saying it would be that we as humans are the cause of the problems that we face. Those problems stem from the fact that we as humans don’t always get along with each other. Some people even say that if there weren’t so many “stupid” people in the world, it would be better place to live and there would also be fewer struggles around us. In the Bible we see that mankind has struggled to get along with each other since the fall of Man in the Garden of Eden. Since the Fall of Man, each of us is born with a sinful nature inside of us that makes us want to sin and rebel against what God would want us to do. In fact, God wants us to get along with each other and His Word is a great place to look to when it is difficult to get along with a co-worker or family member. With all of the knowledge of the Bible, and what it’s teaching could help us to do in getting along with others, we as humans still pick and choose what we believe to be the best solution when it comes to dealing with other people; whether it is good or bad for the relationship.…

For this project, I am placing myself in a hypothetical context as a staff pastoral counselor at my home church in Valley City, ND, serving a congregation of approximately 200. I have chosen as my overarching goal for life to serve others in the capacity for which the Lord has gifted me and prepared me to counsel and minister to them. 1 Peter 4:9 tells us that, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” I believe that serving in a counseling role is my gift, and that it is my calling to use that gift to serve others, and in doing so, to obey God.…

In this example, I will be going over leadership and the Christian foundation that we were created in the image of God. From the very beginning of our creation as humans, we were give leadership over all his creation. With leadership, in any aspect, you will possess tremendous responsibility, and power over others, and their lives. King David stated in Psalm 139 “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous-How well we know it.” (Etzel and Gutierrez, Praxis Beyond Theory, 2012, p 61) AS Christians, one knows, without a doubt, that we are created in his image. Therefore, we have to always keep in that mindset. The Bible says “if it is teaching, let him encourage; If it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; If it is leadership, let him govern diligently; If it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. (Men’s Study Bible, NIV, Romans 12:8, 1997) I am currently enrolled for a BS in Business administration with a major in Project…

    My Philosophy of Ministry

The second part of my philosophy of ministry is to train leaders. A leader in the church is a godly servant who is influencing others in the church. Building leadership development in the local church is vital to the continual growth of the ministry (Acts 6: 3-4; 2 Tim. 2:2). I want to always be in the process of training individuals and preparing them to step into a leadership position. The leadership training process needs to include not only theological study and “hands-on” involvement, but community and relationship development as well.…

There are several factors, which have contributed immensely to the individual characteristics, which I possess. According to Haralambos and Holborn (1995), socialization is the process by which individuals learn the culture, the guidelines that direct conduct in particular situations (norms) and the values of their society. My family, which was my primary agent of socialization, set the positive foundation for developing my identity during my childhood (although initially I did not realize this purpose). I had mixed emotions as to whether or not it was a fortune or misfortune to be the daughter of a teacher. There were times when I felt like I had too many obligations and that too much was expected of me because I was a "teacher's daughter". I often felt robbed of my childhood and cheated of my happiness, especially when I saw other children my age come home from school - if they went - and play "child-like" games whenever and however long they wanted to. This was certainly not the case with me because I was often told that I had five sisters and therefore I had very little need to go out and play with other children, I was even designated the hours to play and the hours to spend doing school work.…

I asked myself, who am I now? How am I now? Honestly, it was quite hard for me to answer this and it made me realize how much I don’t know myself yet. But then I still tried to look back at what I do or how I usually am when I’m with my friends or whenever I am just alone. Then I realize how sad I actually am. Not in a way that I hate my life and in a way that I would want to kill myself and stuff like that but just sad for some reason that I can’t explain. I have to be honest that I’m not a positive person, not at all. I always think negative in a way that I would tell myself that I would just fail and nothing will happen to me and whatnot. I, then start to think to myself, what made me to become this kind of person?…

My desire is to become a Pastor. To lead the people of God to a genuine relation with God, that would help them to realize the purpose, plan and destiny that God has for each of their lives. The foundation of what every Pastor, Evangelist, Teacher, should be to make real the fact that God is actively involved with His creation. This is seen from the very beginning when He created Adam they had such a close relationship that it is said by many theologians have said that Adam walked and talked with God in a way that no human being has since. We know from scripture that God walked around in the garden of Eden; Genesis 3:8.... And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.....This shows us that God is actively involved in the lives of his people.…
