God's Chesed In The Old Testament
The stories of the Old Testament are familiar to many. We know the tale of Noah and the Ark, the story of Ruth and Naomi, the narrative of Abraham, and the storyline of Kind David. All of these stories have something in common. However, what they all share is something not many people are aware of. Chesed it God's commitment to us. And in all of these books of hope, friendship, and faith, God's chesed is apparent.

There are several instances of God's chesed all throughout the Old Testament. One of those instances is the story of Ruth and Naomi. In this story Naomi loses her two sons. One of her deceased children was Ruth's husband. Naomi tried to persuade Ruth to leave her and find a better life. But Ruth insisted on building a new life with her mother-in-law. The second

Though she could have easily found a new husband to provide for her, Ruth decided that her mother-in-law was more important than her personal wellbeing. Ruth's chesed to Naomi shows God's chesed to us. He puts everything aside to care for us. We are God's number one priority. And even if we insist that we do not need Him, God will always be there to take care of us. The story of Abraham shows us that if we are committed to God, God will be committed to us. Abraham followed every single instruction God gave him. In return, God displayed His chesed by keeping His promise of making Abraham a father of many nations.

The study of God's chesed has invoked in me feelings of comfort, reassurance, and tranquility. Learning about God's commitment to humanity has brought me to the realization that I will never be alone. No matter how far I stray from the path of righteousness, God will always be at the end of the pathway to welcome me with open arms and forgive me from my mistakes. The Lord knows that I cannot be perfect. So if there ever arises an instance where I cannot fulfill what God has asked of me, I know that He will show mercy on

In this particular instance, God used Elisha ability to listen, and see beyond what others took for granted as being all that there is. Elisha trusted God not only to lead him on a journey of helpfulness, but also a path where God would protect and provide for him. Elisha trusted God to help when he, Elisha, asked. God fulfilled and repaid that faithfulness many times, providing great miracles. Such a one is portrayed in this passage. A king’s plans were known, and Israelites were saved from battle. An army was blinded, and a city was saved from slaughter and pillage. An army was handed over to the king of Israel, who listened to and trusted God’s prophet, the end result being peace, of a kind, with Aram. Again, saving Israelite lives and property. God continues to lay blessings upon the Israelites regardless of the sin running rampant throughout the people. They do not listen to the prophet Elisha, and this brings about their destruction. “In the Books of Kings the greatest single cause for the failure of Israel was the policies of their kings and their lack of obedience to the prophetic word” (Arnold & Beyer, 2008, p. 240). The people had allowed sin to flourish, and the result was death and destruction to the whole nation. “Deuteronomy stated clearly that Israel would succeed in the Promised Land only if the people remained faithful to the covenant. Disobedience meant the nation…

Ruth was shown favor in God’s eyes by her actions of perseverance, faithfulness, love and endurance; which shows us how actions and commitments of ordinary and unexpected people such as foreigners and widows can change the course of history. “This again provides a contrast to the book of Judges, in which loyalty within bounds of the covenant is scarce” (Hill&Walton,…

From book-to-book within the Hebrew Bible, the God of Israel is described in many different ways. Depending on the events that are taking place, Yahweh takes on “new” roles that are depicted through the authors’ usage of various titles. Some examples in the book of Genesis are when Yahweh is portrayed as the “Judge of all the earth” (18.25), the Creator (1.1-2.22), and the deliverer of enemies (14:19b). Each of these characteristics that are attributed to Him are exemplified through the special circumstances of His people.…

Ultimately, hesed is a term that can also be translated to “mercy” or “lovingkindness” which is exactly how God demonstrates the term in the book of Ruth. Although Naomi’s daughters-in-law were widowed, God showed love and mercy to them by blessing them with another husband, such as providing Boaz to Ruth. The term goel describes this example and shows God’s hesed towards His people and how if there were “jeopardized covenant blessings” that they could be regained. Another example of God extending His hesed to His people is in chapter 1 verse 6 when He promises “the restoration of sinful Israel from famine and death to grain and life.”…

After several years of being beaten up by life I finally realized, my way was not working for me. I remember crying out to God, “God if you are real I need you to help me.” I said, “If you are not, I am going to take something to get me out of this misery.” Immediately, I heard someone say, “God loves you.” It was James Robison, on TV. With tears running down my face, I began to listen to Him. I do not remember what else he said, but it was like God was talking to me Himself. After that I began to read the Bible. I wanted to know as much as I could about God, and my life has never been the same. That is why the words, “He filled his empty mind with the transforming word of Jesus…” Towns, p16) were relatable to me. Because of these reasons, I chose the pragmatic test of experience.…

In essence, God choses to lead with his grace in order to win the people back. The same can be useful in a marriage relationship. Couples will sometimes have to choose grace in order to win back their lover. In addition God says, “I will make you my wife forever, showing you righteousness and justice, unfailing love and compassion. I will be faithful to you and make you mine, and you will finally know me as the Lord”…

Throughout the Historical books of the Old Testament many people failed and were weak. The first persons to display their weakness was Adam and Eve. They both failed and ultimately caused sin to enter this world. Moses made the mistake of striking the rock instead of speaking to it, because he was enraged with the people. Ultimately God used him even though he was weak.…

The first 39 books of the larger work called the Bible, is called the Old Testament. The Bible itself is arguably the best selling and most read book of all time, yet it’s well known to be quite challenging to read through and understand. The Old Testament portion of the Bible, notably the most difficult portion of the Bible for most to study and follow, yields 39 books from multiple authors, and spans over 4000 years of crucial world and church history. If that were not enough to take on, the Old Testament comes our way through multiple styles of authorship and formats, including but not limited to, books of history, law, proverbs, ethics, philosophy, treatises, dramas, songs, epics, biographies, and letters. There have been many books written and published to survey, explain, and/or bring to light the Old Testament, but none more helpful to me than the review subject of this paper, the work of Dr. Elmer L. Towns, entitled “A Journey Through the Old Testament”.…

    "Peace Child" Reflection

New insights I gained about God while reading Peace Child was how God is so powerful, He is able to work in the most hopeless of places. This really gave me peace as I read this. Sometimes in this Biola bubble, our problems, while still huge, are microscopic in terms of fearing of being tortured and eaten. Yet, if God can work amongst the Sawi, then God can certainly work amongst any situation. But then again, if the Sawi can completely leave their culture and traditional ways behind to passionately serve Christ, then how much more dedicated faithful I should be, instead of having a wandering heart. He has blessed me with comfort, fulfilling my needs, and I not only have taken so much for granted, but I don’t thank Him enough or give Him the dedication He deserves from me. This book has convicted me and brought me to reflection of what and whom I am truly serving. And just how important it is to always equip myself with the promises and truth of God. I am to hold fast to His words, meditate on them, which I don’t do enough. This will bring me strength in my faith so that when circumstances arise, my heart is not so quick to wander. Or else, what is the point if I am not consistent?…

    How God Changed My Life

One day, in my loneliness, I spoke to God and asked for His help. I believe His answer came when I attended my first youth camp on April 29, 2007. It was during an altar call that I heeded His call and felt God moving wonderfully in a loving and powerful way. A great peace came into my heart. Though my circumstances did not change immediately, still I got great peace and joy in my heart. No words could ever express what I felt that day as I knelt and cried before the Lord. For the first time in my life I felt that God was present in my life. It was a very strange feeling for me. I felt very peaceful. I wanted this…
