Goldilocks And The Three Planets By Neil De Grasse Tyson
“Goldilocks and the Three Planets” “Goldilocks and the Three Planets” is an article written by Neil de Grasse Tyson that sums up the creation of the planets and why life is on Earth. He sets it to the story of Goldilocks, where Earth is the Little Bear’s stuff. He then breaks down the different reasons as to why we continue to have life. All of that is the basics to understanding Exoplanets. Exoplanets are just planets that orbit a star that is not our Sun. There is a subsection of exoplanets called “Goldilocks Planets”, coined by Neil de Grasse Tyson. A “Goldilocks Planet” is an exoplanet that is within its host stars habitable zone. The habitable zone is a band around the star where it is “just right”, water is in a liquid form, which makes …show more content…

Kepler is a part of NASA’s Discovery Program, low-cost, American focused space missions. (Kepler Spacecraft) The Kepler spacecraft worked in conjunction with the Keck Observatory, located at the top of a dormant volcano in Hawaii. (Howell) Kepler can still find exoplanets, just in a smaller field of view. Kepler uses a method called the transient method, Kepler watches a star until there is a dip in the brightness, this is a tell-tell sign that a planet just passed in front of the star. This method produces a lot of false positives, so the facts must be checked by another method. (Kepler Spacecraft)This is where the Keck Observatory plays a big part. The Keck Observatory uses infrared to photograph the coordinates that the Kepler Spacecraft sent to it. (Howell) The Kepler mission was going to last seven years, from 2009 to 2016, but in 2013 three of the four reaction wheels failed. NASA has a plan to reuse the spacecraft in its new K2 Program, which will use Kepler’s camera and also uses the energy from the Sun to push the spacecraft around its own orbit. (Wall) NASA has a new spacecraft in the midst for the future, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS. TESS will use an array of cameras to find exoplanets closer to home. …show more content…

Kepler-186f is the first most Earth-like planet to be found in the habitable zone, it orbits the Red Dwarf Kepler-186. One of the biggest discoveries for “Goldilocks Planets” is the discovery of the Solar System Kepler-62. Kepler-62 is a five planet system 1200 light years from Earth. Solar System Kepler-62 has two planets that are within its habitable zone, Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f. Both planets could have water, but Kepler-62f would be frozen unless there are greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere to heat it up. Kepler-62e would fit Heller’s model for a Super-Earth. (Alien Planet Earth) There have been recent discoveries of Earth-like exoplanets, Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b. The size and location of these planets means that these planets have a high chance of being rocky, like the Earth. While Kepler-438b is closer in size to the Earth, Kepler-442b is a better choice due to its location, Kepler-442b gets around seventy percent of the solar energy that the Earth gets. “We are now closer than we’ve ever been to finding a twin for the Earth,” says NASA scientist Fergal Mullally. What is Gliese 436b? Gliese 436b, also known as GJ 436b, is a Neptune-sized exoplanet, a planet that orbits a star outside the solar system, which orbits the red dwarf Gliese 436. Gliese 436b was the first Neptune discovered with certainty in 2007. It was among the smallest known transiting planets in mass and radius, until the much smaller Kepler exoplanet discoveries began in 2010. Gliese 436b was discovered in August 2004 by R. Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institute of Washington. Also, Geoffrey Marcy of University of California, Berkeley, discovered Gliese 436B using the radial velocity method, which is a method that if a star has a planet around it, it is not correct to say that the planet orbits the star. Instead, the planet and the…

Debra Fischer completed her undergraduate work in science and physics at San Francisco State. Her search for planets began when she was a graduate student in astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. While there, she worked with astronomer Geoff Marcy. Marcy co-founded the California and Carnegie Planet Search Project with Paul Butler in 1983. The purpose of this planet hunting team was to discover extra-solar planets orbiting nearby stars. Swiss astronomers discovered the first extra-solar planet in 1995. Marcy’s team validated the existence of three more planets and a multi-planet system in 1996. Debra Fischer joined the project as a post-doctoral fellow managing the Lick Observatory in 1997. Through her work there, Fischer discovered more three planets herself by 1999.…

In the story The Universe Itself was Laughing author Loren Eisley undergoes a liminal process where he goes from respecting nature to learning that nature is a microcosm of the universe. Eisley’s cognitive was altered when he encountered a fox puppy who was digging through a piles of untidy trash. He realizes that the fox, an anomaly to his previous belief of viewing nature through a “upright human arrogance”, represented the universe in the liminal stages of creation. The author believed this because he said that the fox was “swinging in some fantastic fashion around to present its face, and the face was so small that the universe itself was laughing” much like the liminal stages of the universe. Also, he says that animals and people of nature…

In her book “Breaking The Chains of Gravity” Amy Shira Teitel tries to explain the history behind the formation of NASA. She states that NASA’s achievements, from the moon landing to the New Horizons flyby of Pluto can be traced back to 1920s Germany, where Max Valier and Hermann Oberth’s first experiments with rocket propulsion coincided with the rise of Hitler and later Wernher von Braun’s infamous V-2 rocket. After Teitel explains the German stage she effectively explains the bureaucratic rivalries generated by competing ideas for getting above the earth’s atmosphere in the United States, by providing backstory to how the Mercury space capsule, rather than the X-15 hypersonic plane, became the first American manned space vehicle. She offers…

The article The Martian Chroniclers a new era of planetary exploration by Burkhard Bilger discusses Earth and Mars known as the “Goldilocks Planets,” this is because Earth and Mars both have the perfect environment for life to be sustained. I was first observed that Mars had evidence that it could sustain life in 1877, by the astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. Schiaparelli drew a map of mars as an “earthly paradise.” This was because he observed that the planet had what appeared to be continents and water channels on the surface. Although, it was discovered that Mars has less water contents then earth’s driest desert. Nevertheless, because of Mar’s atmosphere and geological environment Mars has the possibly that it can sustain life. NASA has sent many space crafts to explore what is on Mars the first was the Mariner 9 then, Viking 1 and Viking 2, the…

Planet Nine, the new planet that has been discovered inside of our solar system. Planet Nine is a planet that astronomers,Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown, have found with research and evidence. Because they used research and evidence Planet Nine hasn't been seen but astronomers believe that they have enough evidence to prove that it is in our solar system. The evidence to prove that it is in our solar system is that scientists have recently noticed a change in orbits of space objects near by,and that can only be caused by a massive planet. This is also how astronomers discovered the planet of Neptune because they also noticed a change in gravity with the other planets .This planet is also causing a clustering of asteroids and comets in the Kuiper Belt. The astronomers used the space-based Kepler Mission Telescope to see the changes and to locate where this planet might be.There are about 2,000 identified planets that are surround our solar system but none are a big deal because there is nothing unique about them like Planet Nine.Planet Nine is different from the other 2,000 identified planets because this planet is actually in our solar system, a place we should have known a lot about by…

    Why Aliens Do Not Exist

A habitable planet is one capable of supporting life. For a planet to be considered habitable, life on it would have to be carbon-based and would have to use liquid water (Lissauer C11). Here on Earth, carbon cycles between the atmosphere, the oceans, living organisms, fossil fuels, and carbonate rocks. Scientists have been searching for Earth-like planets for a long time. According to an article called Are We Alone by Gregg Easterbrook, Frank Drake held a conference of physicists and astronomers in the year 1960. There he proposed his mathematical equation for predicting whether aliens exist. The result based on the equation was that there are about a million extraterrestrial civilizations scattered across our galaxy. Many of the scientists…

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the largely self-educated British physicist Michael Faraday was visited by his monarch, Queen Victoria. Among Faraday's many celebrated discoveries, some of obvious and immediate practical benefit, were more arcane findings in electricity and magnetism, then little more than laboratory curiosities. In the traditional dialogue between heads of state and heads of laboratories, the Queen asked Faraday of what use such studies were, to which he is said to have replied, "Madam, of what use is a baby?" Faraday had an idea that there might someday be something practical in electricity and magnetism.…
