Goldilocks Zone Research Paper
The Goldilocks Zone The 21st century is home to countless technological breakthroughs in astronomy. Scientists dwarf their latest discoveries with something bigger and more relevant every year. Day and night astronomers shower the cosmos with radio waves and probes hoping to find any form of extraterrestrial life. The war between science and religion nears its climax as the data pours in. Christian beliefs may be questioned as mankind draws closer than ever to discovering life outside of earth. From the beginning of documented time, the human species has looked to the skies for answers. Observing star formations and the relationship between time and space, the Mayan empire was able to create accurate calendars and predict eclipses. Ancient Sumerians dating back to 4500BC believed in the god “An” which in Sumerian means “sky”. …show more content…
The Higgs Boson (God particle) was discovered in 2012. Starting with the early days of space travel, NASA has always had its eye open for extraterrestrial life. When NASA launched the pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts toward Jupiter, they equipped the spacecrafts with plaques. On these plaques, are detailed diagrams of where the plaques originated from and who created them. The plaques are also equipped with 14 radiating lines used to represent the 14 pulsars. The lines are aligned in a manner to locate the Sun as the home star. Frank Drake, an American scientist and astrophysicist, founded SETI, the method of using personal computers to aid in the search for extraterrestrial life, and created the Drake equation. The Drake equation allows scientists to calculate the uncertain number of factors which may determin possible extraterrestrial civilizations. Frank Drake looks to answer the question “ How many planets might have life?” The equation highly involves the fraction of stars that have planets and the number of planets that could support

The discovery of this planet prompted a lot of questions from both scientists and religious persons alike, though the context of these questions is vastly different. The scientists in this debate asked more logic-based questions, such as whether or not there was water on the planet and whether or not a rocket could travel there someday. They also questioned whether there could be life on this planet. The Evangelists, however,…

The Mayans and the Aztecs continually watched the stars as a way of predicting the future and interpreting religious phenomena. The Mayans built a number of observatories in their various city states, with a notable one in the city of Chechen Itza. Through the careful and detailed observations the Mayans made, they were able to accurately to predict the transit of Venus as well as construct a clock that, by some accounts, was more accurate than today’s atomic clock. The Mayans furthermore used the stars to schedule sacrifices, write the Mayan Codices, and orient buildings. The impact of celestial alignment on culture is not unique to this area; archaeoastronomy focuses on how ancients used astronomy around the world, in places like Stonehenge and the great pyramids in Egypt. The Aztecs likewise used the stars as a means of scheduling religious holidays that required human sacrifice, as well as to predict the future and to orient pyramids, just…

The stars bring inspiration to many cultures. Several Native American tribes look to the sky for answers. They use simple observations of celestial bodies to help understand and regulate their lives. The Hopi tribe primarily watch the Sun and the Moon. They spend their time watching the objects in the sky and performing activities based on their observations. Many of the activities that they perform hold religious and cosmic significance to them. The Hopi use their given knowledge to understand important aspects in their lives. They invest themselves in being strongly connected with nature. This connection leads to a strong relationship and understanding of the earth's motion and annual appearance of objects in the sky.…

Not only did The Apollo Program prove NASA’s capabilities, but other space projects have also had significant accomplishments. Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, various spacecrafts were sent into space to explore the Earth, Sun, Mercury, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Jupiter. NASA’s Discovery program, one of their low cost missions that focuses on the solar system, sent the Hubble Space Telescope in April 1990 to orbit Earth and take photographs of its atmosphere. The photos taken by Hubble “revolutionized ideas about the universe, contributing to the discovery of dark energy, a force that caused the universe to expand at an ever-increasing rate, and the discovery and characterization of planets outside the solar system” (Flynn). For centuries, humans have had limited knowledge about space and the planets that occupy it, however, The Hubble Space Telescope expanded the world’s knowledge on astronomy.…

Understanding how the Maya viewed the Earth, surrounding sky, and our very existence is key in grasping how astronomy played into their religion. Mayan cosmology places Earth at the center of the universe, as the first layer in a sequence of the heavens, Earth, and the underworld. It is envisioned as a large wheel surrounded by a divine water known at the teoatl, which extends to the horizon. The second layer, known as the Ilhuicatl metzli, consists of the moon and clouds. The fixed stars make up the third layer, called Citalco—home to the deity Citallicue, “She of the Starry Skirts.” The fourth and fifth layers are comprised of the sun and Venus respectively. The Ilhuicatl Mamalhuazocan is the sixth layer and home to “Stars that Smoke,”…

universe.” (Milbrath, xiv) Astronomy within Aztec culture thus “developed an extraordinary cosmology, constructing a complex mythological system.” (Portilla, 28) Conversely, through Portilla’s Aztec Thought and Culture, it seems to be that most of the cosmology logic was founded in a metaphysical world, “the world above and beyond us” which Ms. Rosalinda Palacios compared to praying, that would eventually lead the individual into a different dimension in which one is able to come in contact with ancestors, or when looking for answers to different situations; such as a medium. (Portilla, 28) Aztec astrology also connects with the Aztec calendar and how they used xiuhpohualli, or “count of the years,” so that they could understand “the various…
