Both good and bad pride “There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good Pride’ represents our dignity and self respect. ‘Bad Pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” John. C. Maxwell. John C. Maxwell, a contemporary author and inspirational speaker enlightened the reader with his profound view about pride. This life coach inspires individuals to be aware of pride, both good and bad. Therefore, pride is a wonderful quality to possess because it encourages a person to try new things, and strive as an individual. Also it motivates a person to help others. For an example pride inspires an individual to try new things. A quote from the Scarlet Ibis that supports this is “once i had succeeded in teaching Doodle to walk…I prepared a terrific development program for him…. I would teach him to run to swim to climb trees, and to fight”(173). This quote supports this side of the argument because it shows how after he taught Doodle to walk, he wanted to teach him other things. Also he didn’t want to give up he had so much pride in him. Another example is pride helps someone strive as an individual. One quote from the story that supports this was “It seemed so helpless from the beginning that it’s a miracle i didn’t give up” (172). This quote from the story supports this side of the story because the older brother didn’t want to give up on Doodle. He had so much pride in him that there was no turning back now.
