No matter what we do we have always had a desire to have a sense of pride. It has always been part of the human race. It is born into us. But the real question is, is it a good thing for us to be like this? Or is it our down fall and one of the main reasons we won't succeed? In this essay i will be stating my opinion and reasons for my opinion on this question and why i believe that pride is a necessary thing to have. I feel that pride is a very important thing and without it we would never be willing to take a chance and have a drive to complete something to better ourselves. For example. In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst he states, “Doodle told them it was i who had taught him how to walk, so everyone wanted to hug me, and i began to cry. “What are you crying for?” asked Daddy, but i couldn't answer. They did not know that i did it for myself; that pride, whose slave i was, spoke to me louder than all their voices; and that Doodle walked only because i was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” (Hurst 175) In this quote from “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator ends up having a brother like he has always wanted. But this brother is crippled from birth and he is forced to take him everywhere he goes in a wagon. The narrator is ashamed to have a brother that can not do anything that normal children do, not even walk. The narrator then tortures his brother and teaches him to walk and do more and more until he eventually kills him. This could have never happened and the brother would have lived out his life and not died at the short age of six, but because of the narrator had so much pride in himself he just kept pushing Doodle until it killed …show more content…
“You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.” In my opinion this quote by Wayne Gretzky is one of the best things to live by. To many people miss out on things because they are to scared to take a shot at something and miss. We have a 100% chance of missing if we never shoot our shot. And in the end even if we do miss, we didn't fail. We learned, We still bettered ourselves. Not one of the greats at sports or the greats in the economy did not fail at something or got discouraged. Every single one of them have all been beaten down, but it’s the way that they picked themselves up thats separates them from the rest.
