Gooey Interpretation

The song “Gooey” was written by the band, Glass Animals, who produce in the genre Indie Pop and Alternative. These genres can be described by a vibrant tempo with a slow pace that steers away from traditional radio music. The general intended audience for this genre and this song is focused on young adults who are still under their parents control. The song is sung from a child’s point of view explaining how hard it is to be a kid, especially when their parents or adults forget what it’s like to be one. This defines how a troubled adolescent seeks for the attention and understanding of an adult figure. However, the more I listed to the song the interpretation changes to an adult speaking to a child, explaining how much simpler life is with no real responsibility, and to not rush into adulthood as the song shows he has experience from both worlds.

The song says, “You just wanna know those peanut butter vibes” to show the simplicity of a child’s diet and how they do not need to worry about anything. Children can eat what they please with no worries about gaining weight or health, they can just enjoy the little things like peanut butter sandwiches. The song also says, “while my naked fools” this creates the imagery of the simplicity of running around naked as a child. Children do not have to care about laws against nudity or the sexualizing of the body, they can just be wild and free with no worries. Finally, the song says “Right, my little pooh bear, wanna take a chance?” This is the adult talking directly to the child helping them learn to take chances.
