According to some authors rebuilding of Abbey Church of Saint Denis is considered beginning of gothic style in 1140. Since then, the Gothic style spread through Western Europe. The Gothic art, is a typically bourgeois and citizen art, which marks the end of feudalism and the renewal of the urban world and the world of trade and craft workshops.
At the beginning, in France, it had specific characteristic too different to Romanesque. Such as: church were considered place where heaven touches earth for this reason buildings fill of light as a box of light. That was possible because they used pointed arch, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and so on.

The Flying Buttress: These elements effectively spread the weight of the new designs, taking the weight off the walls and transferring force directly to the ground. Rather than just being a simple support, buttresses were often elaborately designed and extremely decorative. This element effectively distributed the force of heavier ceilings and bulkier designs, and could support much more weight than previous pillars. Arches allowed for much more vertical height, too.
