The monsters:
Mad scientists ( Dr. Frankenstein), vampires (Dracula), werewolfs, mummies, ghosts, murderers, and other monsters.
Excess:
Something there is too much of or overdoing things. It deals with things that are excessive and extreme.
Transgression:
To cross lines or break boundaries. Often it deals with people breaking rules or laws. Vampires transgress the boundaries of life and death. Werewolves trangress from man to animal. A lot of gothic literature deals with struggers between binaires. ( when thins can be divided in 2) Civilization vs. Wilderness. Virture vs vice. Light vs darkness. Good vs evil. Order vs chacs. West vs east. Life vs death. Science vs magic. Man vs animal. Known vs unknown. Present vs past. Heaven vs hell.
These threats are scary because the threaten not just to kill you or destroy things, they can change you and destroy society. You can become one of them. 1) The past is something negative that returns to haunt ud. You do not want to have your past catch up with you. The past is barbaric, dark and uncivilized. It can be both abstract and literal things of the past. 2) Spectres, demons, monsters, corpses, skeletons, evil aristocrats, and fainting heroins. Monks, nuns, sciencetists, madmen, doppelgangers, fathers, husbands, criminals. 3) Romanticism embraces culture, gothic reflect cultural anxieties. Romanticism deals with love and compassion, gothic deals with obssesion and fear. Romanticism deals with awe-inspiring wild, untamed nature, the gothic presents nature as untamed and
