Ch. 3 ID’s
1. John Calvin- A demanding religious leader who pushed the ideas of Martin Luther. Calvin wrote his doctrine in Latin in 1536. Through this doctrine he formed Calvinism, which became the most popular to beliefs through all the settlers. These Protestant beliefs affected many generations that had yet to come because they were very demanding and it was widely spread throughout the colonies.
2. Anne Hutchinson- A smart, witty young woman who would challenge the Puritan orthodoxy. Because fighting against the religion of a country was illegal Anne faced a trial in 1638. Here she was banished to New York and killed by Indians. She was important to this time era because she fought for her beliefs, although she was found guilty, she fought for her beliefs.
3. Roger Williams- Having a vast dislike for the Church of England and the Bay Colony charter Williams did things his own way. As the creator of the first Baptist church in America, Roger Williams allowed religious freedom to both Jews and Catholics. Roger’s importance is focused on his want, and strives for new beliefs through England.
4. Henry Hudson- An English explorer who worked for the Dutch East India Company. While sailing through North America he found the Delaware Bay, and the New York Bay. While sailing up the Hudson Rive Henry Hudson thought he found a passageway through the new country, but to his dismay he did not. He is significant because he was one of the people trying to look for a passageway through the country.
5. William Bradford- A wildly intelligent scholar who could read and write the languages of Hebrew, Greek, Latin, French, and Dutch. Because of his vast amount of intelligence he was elected governor of Plymouth 30 times. His biggest fear was that non-Puritan might corrupt his experiment in the wilderness.
6. Peter Stuyvesant- As the leader of a small Dutch military force Peter Stuyvesant led this force to fight the Swedish.
