Artwork is laid out all around us whether it is seen across city buildings or in galleries around the world. In this advertisement, they incorporated the artwork of a man named Cheeming Böey, who created a different kind of art form by using Sharpie pens and paper cups. Although it may sound bizarre that this artist used paper cups as his canvas and sharpie pens as his drawing materials, his artwork is truly commendable. However, the graphic designers of this advertisement choose his artwork for a completely different reason. In hopes that they could relate Sharpie pens to the people by showing the people that there are unknown possibilities in using their product. However, this message is not the only tool that the graphic designer used for instance: the way that they manipulated space and light as well as adding an asymmetrical balance and emphasis on the advertisement. The purpose of any advertisement is to…

Most of the assigned books that I have read in my English classes are boring and dull. I repeatedly took breaks and checked how much longer I had until I reached the assigned reading portion for the night. However, The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls was not one of these books. I flipped through page after page as I read about Jeanette Walls and her interesting life story. The reason that I was intrigued with Jeanette Walls memoir was because I related it to my family. Throughout the book, I found similarities between my family and the Walls’ through Jeanette’s siblings, Rose Mary, and the family chemistry.…

In Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott,” the eponymous Lady is cursed to spend her life alone, weaving in the top of a tower, with a mirror as her only window to the outside world. Though she is trapped against her will, “in her web she still delights / to weave the mirror’s magic sights”. Into her endless tapestry, she weaves in all the images shown to her in the mirror, such as funerals, weddings, and the people who pass by on the road to Camelot. This creation of art is her only pleasure in life. However, after what is implied to be years of isolation, she becomes “half sick of shadows” and loses her artistic passion. At the chance passing of Lancelot, she cannot bear it any longer and leaves her weaving to look out and see the world for what it really is, bringing about her own death in the process. The Lady does not die for her love of Lancelot, who just happened to catch her interest at that moment, but for her love of life and the world, which she could not experience and, therefore, could not recreate in any way that did it justice in her mind.…

I really enjoyed Dr. Monica Smith’s lecture on what she does here at the college, and I also loved how the conversation progressed throughout the time that she was with us. It was enlightening to know what she does on the campus, and how she has already implemented changes to make the help make the campus more inclusive. Based on my experience with the previous Director of Diversity, I was never really sure what the individual in that position actually did. However, I learned that what she does focuses more on the administration and faculty, which I am happy to know. For example, she stated that, “She trains campus security officers about implicit bias and talked with them about police activity and the black lives matter movement” and how…

Professor Catherine Orr teaches critical identity studies at Beloit College in Wisconsin. She says when she discusses whiteness her white students see race as, “What other people have.” Is this to say that they see themselves as having no race? Race is something other people have, but not me. While I don’t believe this, entirely, I do understand it. For me I don’t identify myself as being white, until I am asked directly, from a questionnaire. But, normally me being white it is not something I think much about.…

When August of sophomore year rolled around and I began my classes, I did not expect all that I would encounter in my English class. From the beginning, this class proved to be more than just exceptional literature lessons. I have been homeschooled since kindergarten, and since I began high school, I have participated in many small classes lead by teachers of my community. This particular class, presented by one of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Song, changed the way I view the world, and allowed me to transition from childhood to adulthood within my culture. As the class proceeded, Mrs. Song became a substantial influence to me, and she mentored me in innumerable ways.…

Some of the challenges that USA Today have been facing include staying relevant in a more technological environment and finding a target audience that no other newspaper had tapped into. The newspaper also took the time to do surveys to see what needed to be improved and managed to create a newspaper that was quick and to the point without all the excess that was of no interest to their target audience. Another challenge that Neuharth had to face was being considered as a serious newspaper with important information and not just trivial junk. It has become more connected with international incidents and sports as well. Consequently changing the initial feelings of its critics. Macartney states “USA Today already has established an enviable,…
