Melba Beals Reflection
Melba Beals is the main person is the main person in this book that I have noticed struggle because of the white people being bullies. Like when she was in the girls bathroom and people threw flame on paper at melba while melba was in the stall. Also when there was a mob at central high and they were going to kill melba but she ran with her grandma and she had to make a brave decision to leave her grandma behind. But then there was that 1 soldier who talked to melba and was warning her about everything bad that was going to happen and to be careful. Melba's grandma made sure she was brave in all the dangerous events by telling melba that warriors don’t cry. By people giving Melba all this strength made me think about my family, friends and church family that inspire me to be strong through anything that effects me in bad way. The main challenges that I face are people calling me names. Another one of my challenges that I face in school is rumors. Or just people taking pictures of me at bad moments so those pictures become embarrassing pictures that try to embarrass me with. The main person that inspires me through these main challenges in my life is basically my mom because in most of my stories that I remember she was …show more content…
I ignored them which it helped me not to allow the bad threats or the drama to get me upset or effect me and my life decisions that I might make. So by my mom telling me to just ignore the threats but take cation of course. Also, by my mom telling me not to get in the drama and me listening to her I might have needed a little help to ignore the threats but I knew if I didn’t ignore the threats and got into a fight and beat a kid up. Then I would have felt bad that I made that bad decision and that the kid got beat

At the time that Beals was born, black and white people in many parts of America (especially the southern states) lived in a legally segregated society. After the Civil War, the “Jim Crow” Laws were put into place to thwart the advancement of black people, and during the time that Beal’s was a child, these laws severely restricted the rights of black people. Beals’ mother was a teacher, and her father worked for the railroad. Though they were better off than many other blacks in Arkansas, they were still subject to the same injustices as the rest of their community. As Beals describes in this book, most black people lived in constant fear of making white people angry and facing brutal, violent retaliation for even the smallest offense. For example, Beals witnessed her father stand powerless as the milkman sexually harassed her mother. Yet Beals’ mother, Lois, fought through the prejudices at the University of Arkansas and managed to obtain a master’s degree in education. Though Lois encouraged her husband, Will, to finish his degree as well, he felt unable to do so. By the time Beals was eleven,…

Though I may have had no fault, the weight still got thrown on me so I can grow stronger from it. In a similar way, this situation goes hand in hand with when I first got bullied in elementary. I never knew that the perception of society would change as I got older, therefore, distiguishing me as an outsider. I never knew that I would get thrown crumbled paper balls and get tripped in the hallways. I never knew that having my self confidence totally destroyed would take years to recover and convince myself otherwise of their heart staggering words.…

Melenie, you have touched on one of the comments which I found surprising in this weeks reading. A “pastoral counselors should be cautious about immediately assuming that all problems a queer person is experiencing in life are related to being queer.” (Hays, 2015, p.342) Prior to this week’s reading I believed this should be very obvious. I would not want to go to counselor and have them say the problem’s I am experiencing in life are because I am black and being discriminated against. If I heard that I would possibly feel hopeless, because just like the queer person who cannot change their queer, I cannot change my…
