Mister Pip – Summary – Simon Frei
The story is set on Bougainville, which is an island in Papua-Neuguinea. The story is about Mathilda, a girl who lives on the island with her mother. Her father went to Australia as a guest worker. The story happens in 1990, the time of the civil war. Some rebels were on the island with weapons. They occupy the island. Earlier there were much more people on the island but all the white people left and now there are just some black people and Mister Watts, the only white man, and his wife living there. Mister Watts is also called Pop Eye. After all the teachers left, Mister Watts was willing to teach the kids. Mister Watts wasn’t a normal teacher. There were lots of subjects he had no idea of. His big passion was the literature. He read aloud to the children from “Great Expectations” of Charles Dickins. The stories were about a different world, a world which was very fascinating for the children. This different world was England in the 19th century. Mister Pip is the main character of the book, which Mister Watts reads for the kids. Matilda is totally fascinated of Mister Pip and he becomes her new imaginary friend. Her mother, called Dolores wasn’t happy with the transformation of Mathilda and she took the book away from Mathilda. Now the real problem began. The rebels heard of Mister Pip and they taught he was an enemy. All expectations of Mister Watts were invalid because he couldn’t prove it because the book was away. The situation escalated. The rebels shot some black habitants and burned some houses. The people who survived weren’t mad at all because they said that they have their air to breathe and their water to drink and that’s enough.

The capacity for evolution defines the intellectual, emotional, social, physical, spiritual, and historical experience of humanity across time and space. It is this human capacity for simple and complex changes within the structures of self and society which provides the inspiration for the scholarly study of leadership. The term leader naturally conjures up historic examples of remarkable human beings, like, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Junior, Muhammed Ghandi, Mother Theresea, and countless others whose life example points out the ability of an individual to ignite within humanity a yearning for cooperative efforts toward creating and sustaining change. Leadership is woven into the fabric of our indivivual and societal life, it provides…

The setting in Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones is brilliantly integrated into the novel and is an essential component to the story and the isolation of the characters. Jones uses the simple elements time, place, and atmosphere to affect the outcome of the plot in specific ways. The novel takes place on the isolated island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea where Matilda, and her small village live. Because the islanders are in an isolated community that is closed off from the rest of the world, they form a distinctive culture and society. One day in Mr. Watts' class, Mrs. Siep came in to share her wisdom to the children of the island; she told the class "If you are feeling lonely, look out for the triggerfish. God mixed the souls of dogs and triggerfish together because, like dogs, a triggerfish will roll over on its side and look up at you" (Jones, 57). Because the villagers are completely cut off, they have a view of…

Most people want recognition and fame; people now a days only help people in need just so they can make a Facebook status about it. However anonymous extraordaries aren’t the average person. They’ll stand in support for what they believe without getting recognition, and for them that is fine because all they want is to be heard. Natalie Warne is a perfect example of an anonymous extraordarist. In her Ted Talk she described how she found a cause that she believed in and literally put everything on the line just so she could succeed at getting Oprah’s attention, and as it turned out she did not want recognition for herself but instead for her cause Invisible Children. Whether you are standing out…

During the simulation, the nurse demonstrated how to perform a physical assessment of an infant and various other interventions as the infant’s status began to deteriorate. Since, I have worked with geriatric patients during the past 11 years, this was an excellent refresher video. I forgot the most important thing in providing care to an infant is to maintain their body temperature. The old saying if you do not use it you lose it is true in this my case. During the simulation, the nurse demonstrated effective interpersonal, communication, and clinical skills. I was impressed with the nurse’s ability to communicate with other members of the healthcare team. The nurse also ensured that the mother was informed of her actions, the rationale, and…
