In the story “Graduation”, a young black girl feels anticipated and honored with her graduation day. However, on her graduation day, she feels frustrated and shadowy because Mr. Donleavy, a white man, delivers a speech to the graduating class of 1940. At first, Angelou is quite excited because she is proud of her academic achievements; besides that, she is also about to make a speech in front of many students. In addition, her mother also gives her a fancy dress with an abundance of embroideries and frills. Furthermore, many people also praise her of her wisdom. When Mr. Donleavy makes his speech, Angelou feels disappointed and bitter because his speech includes too much racism. In the uninspired speech, he says a little improvement will be done in black school, while a lot advanced equipment is offered in Central School (a white school). He also mentioned that all the black should pursue is those jobs at the bottom of the society such as maids and farmers.…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. All in all he was almost exact the same person as I am he likes basketball, he helps others, and he does well in school.…
Claude Brown was born in 1937 and raised in Harlem--that district of Manhattan north of Central Park between Eighth Avenue and the East and Harlem rivers. His parents had moved up from South Carolina in 1935 and settled in a tenement at 146th Street and Eighth Avenue. Included in the family were two girls, Carole and Margie, and two boys, Claude and Pimp. The Browns were among the first of the waves of black migrants who left sharecropping farms in the South to come to the urban North. To these people, moving to the North meant a better life--a life in the "promised land." Claude--or Sonny, as he was called by his family and friends--spent his preschool days battling other boys in the streets of Harlem. He was encouraged to do so by the lifestyles of the street people. He was adopted as a mascot for an infamous Harlem bebop gang, the Buccaneers, and later became a member of its stealing division, the Forty Thieves. By the time he was ten years old, he had been in and out of New York's Children Centers and had been expelled from school several times. His parents reacted in two ways: His father tried to beat him into changing, and his mother pleaded with him, believing that Claude had been "born with the devil in him." Hoping that Claude would do better away from New York, his family sent him to live with his grandparents in South Carolina. During…

Education has become an important factor in the ever-volatile world, from elementary school to junior high-to-high school. Individuals who are fortunate to obtain an education do so, but they never think much of it until the concluding days of their high school years. Concerns about life beyond high school strikes many profoundly, while others possess a clear vision of their desired future, which may include college. Personal growth and success derives from the experiences one obtains and encouragement one receives, all in which leads one to pursue a higher education.…
Senior Year, the brief period of time where high school responsibilities seem to fade and motivation is nowhere to be found. Some equate this phenomenon to a disease, dubbing it “senioritis” and as my own senior year drew to an end, I also began to show more and more symptoms.…
Life after graduation can be an emotional rollercoaster for an aspiring careerist. The joy of getting the interview and the agony of receiving a rejection letter shortly after. One company in particular preys on college graduates. However, with out customer service experience the chances of getting hired are slim to none. The interviewing process for this cellular phone service provider is tedious to say the least. The method used is referred to as the STAR Method which stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This is basically a bunch of questions asking the interviewee to "name a time when you had to'' or ''give me an example of a time"..etc. The first interview consists of a pre-screening phone interview that last about five minutes. If a candidate successfully completes the phone screening interview, it will be followed up with a second phone interview. The next step to getting hired is getting an appointment to take a computerized test. The results of the test are revealed before leaving the site. If it has been passed successfully, a human resources representative will schedule an actual interview. This fourth interview basically consists of a supervisor reading an 8 or 9 page list of STAR Method questions that are unbelievably repetitive. Surprisingly this is not the final interview. There is a final phone interview where a HR person asks you the same exact questions. Many have made it to this fifth interview only to find out that they did not have enough customer service experience for the position. This is what Recent graduates go through on an ordinary basis until they find that one employer that is willing to give a person with enough perseverance to make it through college, an opportunity to gain experience and prove themselves professionally. After all that is the whole purpose of a…

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to choose between losing all your old memories or never being able to make new ones? About 100,000 people per year experience amnesia. Amnesia is partial or total loss of memory. People with amnesia really go through this. However, people with amnesia do not have a choice in the matter. Furthermore, what if they did? The choice is hard. Most people would consider the possibilities and change their minds time after time. However, after considering a myriad of options, the choice rang clear to me. It seems to me, still being young, that losing all my old memories would be the best way, so I can still advance in life. Furthermore, losing all my old memories would have its pros like being able to advance in my life or even start fresh with a clean slate, but it also has disadvantages like not remembering who I was, or even being able to do simple day to day tasks at first.…
