Extra Credit Film: The Hmong in America
Film: Gran Torino
The Hmong cultural group is always targeted as the racial discrimination especially by the white people of the America. The same concept is shown in the film Gran Torino where the white American Walt who is actually an overt racism personality makes fun of the people that are belonging to other race and his main focus is always his neighborhood Hmong family. The family shown in the film that belong to Hmong culture are shown as very scared one and that are not even independent and beside the rude behavior of Walt they ask for his intervention in their every decision. The cultural group of Hmong race in the film revolves around certain
of their immoral activities that make them always targeted by the people especially white Americans. It is also observed in the film that the status of the Hmong people in America is very weak and this trait of the society actually makes them scare of taking any decision or to fight for them. In the film also the dominance pf the American people especially of Walt is observed through out in the film.
The cultural aspects of the Hmong culture are actually portrayed as on the dark side of the society that are actually not 100% true in the real society. The 1st aspect that is depicted in the film and is also observed in different text of Fadiman is of the backwardness and outdatedness of the Hmong culture. Their main focus is always on relying on old methods of education, job and also in medical field on which Fadiman has also written a book. Secondly the male member of the Hmong family system are shown and portrayed as weak that are dependent upon others to make their decisions in their daily life. The male members of the families of the Hmong culture are not only shown as weak but rather they completely depend upon other to earn for their families also. It is depicted that their women ate more strong and at times to prove themselves right and strong they involve in the immoral activities of the society as well that make their impression more down the struggling nature is another part of the Hmong culture that is depicted in the film and is again shown as weak because it is depicted that their this nature actually is the main cause of racial discrimination that they face.
