The rain changes from a drizzle to a downpour. A whooshing sound startles me and I look up. In the dark sky above me I see a single black bird fly across a streetlight, a raven or a crow. My ears feel like they’re bleeding. Suddenly, I hear a loud bang, like the sound of a gunshot very close by. I am struck by a profound sense that this was a bad idea. “How am I going to get out?”, my friend whispers in fright. Sirens of a police car fast approaching echo throughout the graveyard. My friends’ frantic gesticulations give me an idea. Hesitating, I take my shoes off, untie my shoelaces and start lacing them together. I press myself down against the edge of the grave and reach down to give her the shoes. The rain pours on my cold chilled body and a rush of terror runs through me. I hear the sirens coming closer, my eardrums become weaker, and the sound penetrates my entire body.
I pull vehemently and imagine myself in a tough game of tug of war. I grip the sneake as hard as I can and yank my friend up so she barely escapes from the grave. The police car is now in sight. It approaches us and we feel the bright lights of the cruiser upon us. At the last minute, it veers by and crosses the road. My friend and I look at each other in disbelief.
