Greasy Sae Character Analysis
After Katniss’s father’s death, in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss and her family begin to struggle to provide food for themselves. Greasy Sae, a lady in District Twelve, steps in to help. There were many ways in which she helped Katniss and her family survive. Who is Greasy Sae exactly and what does she do? She is an old lady who works in the Hob. “The Hob is the black market in District Twelve” (The Hob). People in District Twelve use the Hob as a place to sell and trade goods. In order to make money, Greasy Sae sells soup; she sells to people in the Hob to help them and herself. “[She is a] woman who sells bowls of hot soup from a large kettle…” (Collins 11). She not only works as a cook but also as a ringmaster of …show more content…
To Katniss, Greasy Sae is the only person that can be counted on. No one in the Hob buys wild dog meat from Katniss except for Greasy Sae. “She’s the only one who can consistently be counted on” (11). When she buys the dog from Katniss, it helps Katniss provide for her family. Greasy Sae always has a way to help Katniss feed her family; she gives Katniss something even if it is not much to show that she can count on her. “[Greasy Sae] takes half the greens off our hands in exchange for a couple of chunks of paraffin. We might do a tad better elsewhere” (11). “[We] made a conscious effort to keep on good terms with her” (Greasy Sae). Greasy Sae and Katniss have created a strong trusting bond. When Katniss and Peeta are in the cave, Katniss is telling Peeta about how she got Prim her goat. Katniss says that she does not want to hurt Greasy Sae by publicly announcing that she is breaking the law (268). She trusts Greasy Sae and does not want to risk losing her trust. Not only could she be counted on to help Katniss, but she also is …show more content…
She tries to makes sure Katniss gets the best deals in the Hob. She tells the Peacekeepers that come to the Hob that the dog meat in the soup is beef; Peacekeepers in tern buy the soup (11). When they buy the soup, the extra money helps Greasy Sae pay Katniss for the dog meet. Greasy Sae protects Katniss from the people in the Hob; she guards Katniss and her meat from the crazy people of the Hob. “Greasy Sae had intervened and sent us with our deer to the butcher…hunks of meat taken, the hide riddled with holes…it had lowered the value of the kill” (269). The less damaged the meat, the more money you can make on it. She is trying to help Katniss by buying things from her. “[Greasy Sae] takes half the greens off our hands. [She is] the only one who can be counted on to buy wild dog” (11). Greasy Sae has gained Katniss’s trust to help her. Greasy Sae helps Katniss in so many ways. With the barrel of her musket propped firmly on the limb of a tree, Charity took steady aim at the deer. The medium-sized buck was grazing at the edge of a thicket of wax myrtles, near where she saw the deer tracks the day before. John and Uriah were squatting in the bushes behind her. She had brought them along to help with the bleeding out of the deer, should she kill one, and to help carry it back to camp. They could then dress it out and help her prepare the meat for making jerky and so forth. She also hoped to can some of the meat so that it would last a lot longer. She was glad that Nancy had shown her how and taught her how to preserve food in glass jars- it was much better than having to dry it all into tough leather strips… Taking careful aim, Charity squeezed the trigger, while saying a quick prayer that the bullet would hit its mark. She was worried that she wasn't close enough to the deer, but if she had tried to get any closer, it would have seen her and ran off into the woods.…

Sammy’s aspiration for Queenie, which begins simply as a young man’s attention in a pretty girl, ends up being why Sammy stood up to his boss and quit “A & P”. Sammy’s unhappiness with his job is shown throughout the whole story with his negative comments about the different people walking through the store. Sammy spoke of his manager having a very fine sense of observation, noting the manager didn’t like the way Sammy smiled. As the girls were leaving the store, Sammy had a vision of how happy he would be to be able to leave the store with them. Thinking quickly, Sammy decided to tell his boss he quit, saying in a loud like voice, hoping to be loud enough for the girls to hear him. After Sammy had said the words I quit there was no way to take back what he had said, it was a done deal, and he couldn’t back out from quitting now. Sammy quickly folded his apron laying it on the counter. Walking out to the parking lot, only to find the girls were gone. His effort of trying to be a hero to the girls by standing up to his boss was not a success. There here stood, in…

Numerous times throughout the story, Boyle refers to not only the main characters as being "greasy," but also describes a variety of other people in the same way. It is ironic that not only is the lake named Greasy Lake, but the individuals who hang out there are also referred to as being greasy characters as well. The 3 main characters find themselves surrounded by "dangerous" characters, and get stuck in the middle of a huge fight. As…

She lives with her mother and younger sister. Her father passes away during a coal mining explosion when she was 11 years old. After that tragedy Katniss’ mother went into deep depression and was unable to take care of her daughter’s, Katniss and Primrose. During her Mothers depression Katniss had to come and step up to take care of the family. Her family was on the verge of survival and on the brink of starvation. “I was determined to feed us...I kept us alive” said Katniss. She did whatever it took to take care of them from walking miles to try and find scrapes from garbage’s in the rich part of town, to hunting in the forest for plants. That’s how her father got most of their food hunting illegally in the forest for plants. Katniss did something remarkable that changed her life forever by using these four words “I volunteer as tribute”. She saved her sister from basically dying at The Hunger Games and putting herself in that situation. She called it an ancient sign for saying “admiration” and “goodbye to someone you love.” She was also very skilled in archery, hunting and trapping. Having learning…

Katniss faced much adversity in her life from her father dying in a mine accident, her having to find food so her and her sister did not starve, and her taking the place of her sister when she is picked to take place in the hunger games. This relates to a lot of people because we face challenges in everyday life, but like Katniss we must be able to overcome these challenges and make the best of it. Katniss also showed a lot of bravery by taking the places of her sister in The Hunger Games this act of bravery is something that many people would not do. If you want to be brave in your life you must be able to sacrifice yourself for another person this is another reason why I believe this book related to so many people.…

Presidents Obama’s commonsense immigration reform proposal has four parts. The subject in which caught most of my attention was the way immigrants can earn their citizenship. This proposal provides undocumented immigrants a legal way to earn citizenship. This would allow those hidden in shadows to come out and pay taxes and play by the rules like everyone else. Those living illegally in the U.S. would be responsible for their actions be passing national security and criminal background check, paying taxes and a penalty, also to learn English before earning their citizenship. Which I hope I can be eligible in a couple of years. There is no uncertainty about their ability to become U.S. citizens if criteria met. The proposal will also stop innocent…

Katniss Everdeen demonstrates great courage even in the most difficult situations. After her father died in a mine explosion, she keeps her family together and alive by “Making sure there was always enough food on the table” (Collins 10). This provides great courage because even though her family is going through a rough period, she still has to figure out a way to put the food on the table. It is not that many years past Katniss father’s death that she went into the Hunger Games. She has to use all her past skills from the wood to stay alive, and they helped her win “The annual Hunger Games, designed to discourage the districts from staging another rebellion against the Capitol” (Collins 26). She volunteers after her younger sisters name was drawn to be a tribute, because she knows she has much more of a chance winning than her sister, Prim. During the Hunger Games, the two last survivors are Katniss and her so called ‘lover’ Peeta. Neither of them wanted to win enough to kill each other, as they could not think of life without one another. Therefore they decided they would die together and eat the poisonous berries, otherwise known as ‘night lock’ and rebel against the Capitol making them have no winner. “I lift my hand to my mouth taking one last look at the world” (Collins 345). The head Game Maker came on the announcements and pleads to not eat the berries and two people from the same District could win. Katniss has showed Panem, that even in dangerous situations that were not always on your side, you can still turn it around and fight for what you want.…
