Leonardo DiCaprio played Jay Gatsby who bought a mansion across the lake from the love of his life (Daisy) who is now married. Casey Mulligan plays daisy who is in a hard place deciding whether to stay with her cheating husband or move on with Gatsby. Toby Maguire plays Nick Carraway who lives in small house next to Gatsby and is Daisy’s cousin.
The historical value of this movie shows what life was like in the 1920s and is another
look on the story itself written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The movie is told through Nick Carraway who lives right next to millionaire Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby specifically bought the house right across the lake from Daisy who five years before this they were in love but Gatsby had to leave and they never got back together. After years of Gatsby throwing giant parties week after week waiting for Daisy to show at one, it never happens. So through Nick, Gatsby gets Daisy to come over for tea so that they could meet again. Once Daisy realizes that Gatsby is back she has to tell her husband that she is in love Gatsby which she finds that she can not do even when Gatsby puts her on the spot in font of her husband. Gatsby and Daisy’s husband get into an argument over her. After the argument Gatsby and Daisy are driving back to their homes from the city in Gatsby’s car and Daisy hits and kills the mistress of Daisy s husband (Myrtle) . At the end of the movie Daisy is suppose to call the next morning to let Gatsby know if she wants to run away with him or not. Right when Daisy called the next morning Myrtles husband shot and killed Gatsby because it was his car that hit his wife and he thought Gatsby was driving it. In the end Daisy was still stuck with her cheating husband and Gatsby had bought a mansion and threw those big parties all for nothing. Gatsby never got Daisy back. While the great Gatsby showed the difference between millionaires and people in poverty in the 1920s I think they over did it and made a lot of stuff to flashy and exciting than what it actually was. There was a lot of inaccuracies of the time period. Many of the cars driven in the movie weren’t even produced until after 1922 which is when the movie takes place. The Chrysler and Empire State building were also shown as being built in the movie but in reality neither of them began construction until about six years later.
I would definitely recommend this movie for someone else to watch. This movies gives a much more exciting way to tell the Story of The Great Gatsby and also has a sweet soundtrack.
