Section F:
The east and west differences emerged from the Greco-Persian war. The idea was that the east stood for despotism and that the west stood for freedom. The eastern and Western conceptualizations still exist but the idea of the East and West in a literal sense is a thing of the past. Today, both the Western and Eastern Civilizations influence each other heavily. Western civilization can be compared to modern day Capitalism and the Eastern Civilization can be considered communism. The relationship between the United States and China is a great example of how the ideas of the two civilizations may still be in effect but in the long run does not really matter.

as stated “Herodotus was known as the World’s first Historian.”(Livius.org). Herodotus was biased towards the Greeks so when he chose to write about the Greco-Persian war it made the Greeks seem like the good guys and the Persians seem like the villains. Due to the fact that there was not a lot of historical documents other civilizations in the future had no choice but to also be biased towards the Greeks and against the Persians. The Thermopylae war in the movie 300 is a perfect example of how the Persians are portrayed because they are perceived as monsters and the Greeks are the protagonists. The thing was that only men could have had political power, women and foreigners basically had no rights. The only way the lower class could move up in social class was by joining the military. The greek had many dictators and the poor class supported them so they could rebel against the rich. Sparta gave most of the political authority to council of elders the Athens was the most distinctive expression of political participation. This can be related to todays United States because the U.S has room for growth. Obviously we give women and foreigners power but it was not always like that. during the late 1800’s it was very similar to this because only men had political
