Greek Contributions To Western Civilization
The ancient Greeks have made many influential contributions to western civilization. These contributions are the most achievable throughout ancient Greece; including philosophy, art, math and science. Also democracy was a major part and is what we use today to elect our representatives. With respect to philosophy, there were some of greatest Greek thinkers back then; including Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. In medicine, Hippocrates had a major influence on the development of western medicine. His student, Plato documented the wisdom of Socrates in a series of manuscripts, which exhibit advanced logical methods and challenge many of society’s common misconceptions. Figures such as Pythagoras and Aristotle also made vital contributions to the

    Ancient Greece influenced Western Civilization in many ways. Many ideas of the Ancient Greeks came from the city-state of Athens. The Greek culture has had a very large impact on the way people have lived. The Ancient Greek civilization made significant contributions to western civilization in the areas of government, philosophy, and math and science. Now government is a system of control citizens, societies and states. It is important to have a government so you can control society as well as your armed forces for protection. As seen in document 1, which is an excerpt from Pericles' funeral oration, the ancient Greeks were one of the first to have a democracy. Though the Athenians had a democracy it was limited and direct. As seen in document 2, which is from the play Antigone by Sophocles, the quotes show that when you defy a tyrant they will be mean this democracy also allowed social mobility and everyone was allowed to serve in the military. Government was not the only way the Ancient Greeks had contributions to Western Civilization. The Ancient Greeks also made many contributions to Western Civilization in the area of Philosophy. Philosophy is the study of knowledge, reality, and existence. Philosophy is important because it can guide your life. Also, as seen in document 3, which is a quote from Socrates, this quote tells us that a life without adventure is a life that there is no point to live. Because of this quote Socrates was accused of heresy, which means that you are challenging religion and state.     The Greeks made contributions in modern day art, architecture and philosophy. ”The unexamined life is not worth living.” (Document #1) This was a quote spoken by Socrates, an Ancient Greek philosopher. He was suggesting by this quote that if you don’t look at life in a different perspective why bother living it. “Since human reason is the most godlike part of human nature...” (Document #2) This was a quote spoken by Aristotle, and Ancient Greek Philosopher. He believed about human nature that making deals or reasoning was the best human quality and separated us from others. “Nor do I think your orders were so strong that you, a mortal man, could overrun the gods‘ unwritten and unfailing laws...” (Document #6) This was an except from Sophocles‘ play Antigone. The values expressed in this play are that the gods are more powerful then humans and that the gods law are not written down but overpower written human law. The picture of the Parthenon in document #7 shows how specific features of that building influenced Western Civilization. The pillars and the shape of the building showed a sense of power and the actual architecture used in the Parthenon is still used today in places like the White House and Lincoln Monument.     An important contributor to philosophy was Socrates (470 – 399 BC). “The unexamined life is not worth living.” This is a quote from Socrates. He believed that a person must ask questions and seek to understand the concept and ways of life (Doc. 1).     Socrates and Aristotle were both Greek philosophers who contributed philosophies. Socrates believed that all people contained real knowledge within them and that self critical examination was needed to bring this knowledge out. Socrates once stated, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” In this philosophical idea, Socrates is suggesting that an individual, who chooses to not think about their own actions, does not truly care about their own life. Aristotle believed in the concept of examining individual objects and being able to perceive their form and establish universal principles. These principles did not exist as a separate higher world of reality beyond material things, but were apart of things themselves. Aristotle has stated, “Since human reason is the most godlike part of human nature, a life guided by human reason is superior to any other….For man, this is the life of reason, since the faculty of reason is the distinguishing characteristic of human beings.” Aristotle is suggesting that an individual who logically thinks about their actions before acting on them, are more superior than those who act without thinking because thinking before acting causes less harm and it shows a person who cares for both themselves and others.
