Green Seattle Partnership Analysis
On Saturday April 30th 2016, I did volunteer work with the Green Seattle Partnership at St. Mark’s Greenbelt. It is a recreational park located next to St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. I helped removed some invasive weeds that were a threat to the native plants. I volunteered from 10 am until 2 pm, and I enjoyed the time that I spent there. The people I met who were working for this project are very professional, and they believe in caring for the environment. They genuinely care about the parks in Seattle and that was clear to me when I was working with them.
The Green Seattle Partnership is the largest urban forest restoration project in the country (“Green Seattle Partnership”). It was formed in 2004 in coordination with the Department of

This includes the absence of tall trees. Native vegetation helps us by providing ecosystem services. Ecosystem services are services provided by the environment that give us a variety of benefits such as clean drinking water, waste decomposition, storm water management etc. The Green Seattle Partnership cares about ecosystem services, because humans and other living species rely on those benefits to survive (“Green Everett Partnership”).
One important ecosystem service that native vegetation provides is storm water management. Seattle has an average of 37.49 inches of rain a year ("Rain Stats"), which makes storm water management an important ecosystem service for this city. The existence of native plants will soak up more rain water as opposed to dead zones with barren land. This also means landslides are most likely to occur in dead zones (“Green Everett Partnership”). Landslides can cause injuries, loss of property, and even death! If we don’t save the native vegetation, then people may get

The people who were working in this organization are very passionate people, and they care about the parks around Seattle and are working towards their 20-year strategic plan. They took the time to explain to me the effects of invasive plants and how to pick out these weeds. Their passion made me want to volunteer with them again during the summer. Now I truly understand the effects of these invasive plants and the effort it takes to maintain Seattle’s forests and parks.
The Green Seattle Partnership is an amazing organization that set up a great goal for the future of Seattle parks. They take care of the native plants and they do it with great passion. Native plants provide us with a lot of benefits, such as storm water management and our physical-mental wellbeing. It is great to know that there is an organization that cares about the parks and forest in Seattle, and they really inspired me to come and volunteer with them

Within this vast service area, Mojave Desert Land Trust is the only conservation organization of its kind operating in and for the Mojave Desert. No other organization, public or private, serves to acquire desert land for protection and restoration. Additionally, no other nonprofit Native Plant Nursery exists in the entire region. This is an incredible strength because having its own nursery increases effectiveness and efficiency of restoration efforts and significantly reduces the possibility of foreign plant species invasion, ultimately benefiting a number of threatened and endangered species that exist in the area, including the Desert Tortoise and iconic Joshua Tree. These factors exponentially increase the value of its service.…

In 1989, a small group of committed volunteers from the Seattle King County Land Trust established Forterra, a land conservation organization based on their mutually held belief that conservation efforts should embrace the combination of private organizations and public action. Since then, this organization has made significant environmental contributions throughout the state of Washington and continues to promote environmental justice. ForTerraʻs primary vision is to preserve all aspects of the environment, not only designated sections of pristine, undeveloped land. This vision derives from the biological reality that all forms of life are interdependent, and that in order for us humans to thrive, all other living parts of nature must thrive…

Through the foundation we would be able to organize a competition with a reward to whoever removes the largest quantity of invasive plants. According to the American River Parkway Foundation’s website, the foundation has removed many acres of invasive plants over the past five years due to a large volunteer effort in the community. Some of the species the foundation has targeted include: the Red Sesbania, Spanish Broom, French Broom, Scotch Broom, and Tamarisk, to name a few. My partner and I believe that this foundation is the most suitable for our project because they are already in touch with the community and would able to aid us in organizing an…

Our national parks are a supposed to be a natural treasure. Here the unspoiled grandeur and beauty of nature can be appreciated in its most pristine form. However, the amount of people that are visiting these parks has risen to levels that threaten the very beauty and well-being of these paradises. Its now seems apparent that there is a price to pay for allowing humans into an area that did not have many humans before.…

While attending Lewis & Clark College I will foster my passion for nature, environmental advocacy, and politics. Participating in things like the Environmental Living Learning Community will provide an engaging and enriching space to form long-lasting connections with people who share the same desire to promote environmental sustainability. Portland and the beautifully wooded campus at Lewis & Clark provide the type of natural environment that inspires my initiative for environmental advocacy. I look forward to exploring the opportunities near and within Portland, including the many hiking trails. The outdoors have been an important part of my life since childhood. Looking back, some of my happiest memories are from visiting National Parks,…

San Diego, to many it’s a land of dreams from coastal backyards to mountain views as well as many areas that imitate the dessert like climates of Arizona. However, it is not just a home for people, but also for many animals and plants as well. California has partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California fish and game to help protect the diverse species of plants and animals that share the lush beauty of this land. One way they are striving to accomplish this task is through the Multiple Species Conservation Plan (MSCP). One organization that assists in the restoration of the native plant and animals of Chula Vista is the Chula Vista Nature Center.…

While playing in the Alaskan wilderness I saw hawkweed amongst the fragrant wildflowers, thick groves of spruce, and along the banks of the Kenai. As a young child, I was naive to the harm that this “pretty flower” could bring to Homer, and due to this I treated it no different than the native flora that sprung up at the edge of my road. Thankfully my grandmother, a horticulturist, invested her time in teaching me how to properly identify vegetation. Through this I also learned how to distinguish what was a weed and what was not. Hawkweed was one of my grandmother’s primary concerns because of how…

For my time spent doing community service, I chose the Urban Ecology Center. I was mainly interested in the field research opportunities as they pertained to my education in Natural Science as well as my own personal passions and interest. The Urban Ecology Center is a community built organization, which gives back to the environment, educates children on being conscious of the environment as well as provides a public space for any one to come and be a part of the goings on or just hang out and use the facilities. The Urban Ecology Center at Riverside Park is where I spent most of my volunteer hours, the building is more adequate for school groups and…

A big environmental issue in Washington State right now is in the protection of the North Cascade Mountains. With miles of hiking trails, secluded camp sites, and all sorts of wildlife to be found throughout the range, preservation is a serious matter. There are over hundreds of different animal species –from cougars to butterflies to fish, or an occasional gray wolf- that reside in these mountains. Between the wet west side of the range, and the drier east side, there are also over 1600 different plant species.…

Our ecosystem is greatly affected by foreign invaders, be them plant or animal. Invasive species can carry diseases or containments that endanger the well being of native humans, plants, animals, and environment. They posses the ability to damage indigenous water and food supplies. Many invaders will take advantage of resources and lack of predators in a new ecosystem, which in turn can lead to extinction of our own plants and animals. The Mountain Pine Beetle is responsible for the destruction of three point six million acres of trees in Colorado…

Located in Morongo Valley, lies a vast, exquisite place of unique wildlife and plants known as the Big Morongo Valley Preserve, which is tasked with promoting plant and endangered species growth. Since I’ve hiked the preserve previously, this will be a great experience to help with the preservation of the preserve. So I chose my project on September 7th to be the Morongo Preserve. On September 15, I read in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve Fall 2017 newsletter that volunteers are needed to help with the restoration of the preserve for National Public Lands Day. I decided on that day to be a part of that. Therefore, on September 30th, I will show up and help with whatever job I am assigned. Once I am done with the assigned job, I will evaluate the work…
