Grendel hates the noise and happiness that comes from the Danes. As a solution to this problem in the book, Grendel sneaks into the hall at night while the Danes are asleep. Since they were asleep, they were unable to fight back; making it easier for Grendel to kill the men, without issue. In the movie, Grendel also goes into the hall at night to kill the Danes. Beowulf promises the Geats that he will defeat Grendel bare-handed. Killing an unarmed man, evil or not, while armed is dishonourable. Written in the epic poem, Beowulf tears Grendel’s arm with his hands. The dismembered arm is then nailed to the wall to show Beowulf’s victory. Grendel was later found dead from bleeding out. In the movie, Grendel and Beowulf were tussling, when Beowulf slammed Grendel’s arm in the door, severing it. Grendel was also found dead from blood loss.
