In the movie, they added details saying that King Hrothgar is the father of the beast, Grendel. But the book never specifies those details. In the epic poem, Grendel, the great beast, slays the Danes in the night, when everyone is asleep, so that none have a chance to challenge him. However, in the movie Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are fully awake witnessing the slaughter Grendel delivers. The poem describes Grendel’s defeat by Beowulf using his only his bare hands and his might to rip off Grendel’s arm. The movie shows Beowulf grappling Grendel, and restraining him with the chain wrapped around his arm. Grendel then tries to flee from Beowulf however, Beowulf slams the door on his arm, severing it clean off. Once Grendel was dealt with, in the poem, Grendel’s Mother rushes to Heorot to avenge her only son. But being a weaker, lesser opponent, Grendel’s mother only makes off with a single thane. In the movie, Beowulf has a nightmare of Grendel’s mother terrorizing and killing numerous men in Heorot. Once awoken Beowulf finds the nightmare to be true. Both the movie and the poem contain Unferth bestowing the sword “Hrunting” unto Beowulf. However, the poem tells about him receiving it before going into Grendel’s Mother’s lair. The movie on the other hand has him receiving the sword as a parting gift as he leaves Heorot.
