ABOUT THE AUTHOR Edward Cox is aWest Point Graduate that graduated a century after Fox Conner. He is an avid outdoorsman and has a Masters Degree from Syracuse University. He was the assistant professor of American Politics. He had an interest in military history which lead to him reading the bios of great leader and Fox Conner was a name that kept reappearing in some of the greatest military leaders in history. With no biography or information on a Major General, Cox began to do research on Conner. Finding that Conner had his aids burn most of his notebooks and any other information, it was that point that Cox decided to write Grey Eminence: Fox Conner and the Art of Mentorship. After extensive research, he was able to complete the book. WHO IS FOX CONNER? Grey Eminence is French for a powerful decision maker or advisor who operates behind the scenes, or in a non public or unofficial capacity. This statement truly defines Major General Fox Conner. Major General Conner was born November 2, 1874 in Mississippi. He is a graduate of West Point Military Academy and …show more content…
He would take one day a week out of his schedule to mentor all of his proteges as well as take an interest in their lives and family. He would even take them hunting and other outdoor activities. One of his proteges was Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was Conner’s Executive Officer (XO) while he served in Panama as the 20th Infantry Brigade Commander. Eisenhower’s command would not let him prepare to go to school because he was the Army football coach. Conner sparked an interest in history and reading in Eisenhower. He would also have him write daily field orders along the way. This was important for Eisenhower that Conner would call in a favor for him to go to Command and Staff early and graduate at the top of his class. The same was true for George W. Patton. They time spent with Conner helped them prepare for War
