Grey's Anatomy By George Gladwell: Literary Elements & Style
Literary Elements & Style
Instead of using commas to separate “doctors and generals and coaches…” Gladwell uses the word “and” to connect each occupation to the next, which tricks the reader into thinking that there are more occupations listed than there actually are. The same tactic is evidenced in “to shape and manage and educate…” By stressing the prevalence and importance unconscious reactions have, the reader will more likely believe that unconscious reactions are influential.
Literary Elements & Style
Gladwell uses a eye instrument-based metaphor to rephrase and reinforce a possible change in perception and consequent interpretation. This directly prompts the reader to evaluate the impact of immediate small details in the forthcoming results.
Questions and Connections

Why might we give such reasons instead of thinking of a more rational one?

In Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith, the protagonist, lives with her friends and fellow residents. One day she gets a dog, and all of her house mates dislike him because the dog chews up their clothes, pees on their beds, etc. Everyone was being respectful--giving rational reasons but with emotion to convey that the dog is problematic and one character mentioned being there for Meredith when she broke up with her significant other. The dog eventually started abusing Meredith’s property so they gave the dog to her significant other (they made up after the break up).

This exemplifies events when not everyone always agrees with their significant other’s interests or beliefs, but continue the relationship, which I think is romantic and cute. Nonetheless, these couples* are rather compatible.

In this section, Gladwell emphasises how cultural legacies operate as strong forces. He starts with the history of the small town situated on the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky, called Harlan. It was founded by eight immigrant families from the northern region of British Isles in the early nineteenth century. The first settlers were herders and this region was cut off from the rest of the state because of its tough accessibility. The town was always thinly populated never crossing the population mark of ten thousand people in its early history. What is of note here is that two of the founding families, the Howards and the Turners were involved in a bloody feud which started as a cheating accusation at a poker game. This feud left dozens dead after numerous brutal attacks. This was one of the many feuds occurring all over Kentucky at that same time. Gladwell was quick to recognize it as a pattern.…

In Gladwell’s opening chapter of Outliers, he begins to tell us about where success comes from. Right away he makes clear that people do not come from nothing, to be successful, all on their own. He does this because you often here sports broadcasters say, “John Doe, came from absolutely nothing, to become this sports All-Start.” Gladwell uses the analogy of the tallest tree in the forest. He says that that tree does not get to be the tallest on its own. Gladwell reminds us that the sun was not blocked from that tree. That tree had no root damage from rabbits. That the tree was spared from a lumber jack. That tallest tree had help from many aspects of nature.…

The simplest way to describe the “Matthew Effect” is to say that the good will only get better and average will remain average. Gladwell supports this claim using sports examples and asserts that success is not based purely on talent, but rather a combination of talent and other uncontrollable factors, such as opportunities and rules determined by society. He supports this claim by describing the process of how hockey’s All-Stars are chosen. Gladwell explains that because of how the age cutoff dates (a rule set by society) in the hockey leagues are set up, the bigger players are cultivated and receive more attention than the smaller players and therefore, become more skilled. Whereas the smaller players, because of the age cutoff date, will…

In Kingwell’s 2012 essay “Intellectuals and democracy”, He deduces that education should be pursued to form wiser and more intellectual citizens. For a dog, they will always be there to welcome you the minute you walk in the front door. They will provide you with unconditional love and protection, but there are a few downsides to owning a dog. Within time and practice, dogs will learn and master new tricks you teach them, but unfortunately, their memory lasts only up to five minutes. They are more active and playful than cats, always wanting a good game of tug of war with a sock or chew toy. All types of dogs need continuous exercise to stay happy and healthy. They need walks even in harsh weather, or perhaps taken to the dog park where they enjoy socializing with others of their own kind. Dogs require baths and brushings as part of their grooming. They enjoy nature and the outdoors, and use both when it is necessary to relieve themselves. Dog owners need to enforce strict rules to provide positive behavior from their dog. Young…

Last week, a stray dog was wandering around my neighborhood. It was a small fury little fella with somewhat of an under bite and matted hair. I ended up naming him Henry just because it seemed right! Henry happened to have taken a liking to me and our front porch. Henry had no intentions of leaving, so we let him sleep in the garage with a blanket. We would have kept Henry but the Vet bill would have been too high. Luckily, there were people we could call to come take Henry to the animal shelter. Those Animal rescuers/ caretakers didn’t hesitate to come, and made sure everything they did was humane. A humane thing the animal caretakers did was take Henry to a shelter.…

Every day there are animals that are abused and neglected by heartless individuals. We live by the quote, “A dog is a man’s best friend”. But how is it that one can do such horrid things to a best friend? Puppy mills, animal hoarders, and careless owners are only a few of the biggest contributors to this horrifically criminal act. It breaks my heart to drive to school everyday and be greeted by an animal out on the road flatter than a pancake, or just roaming around looking for scraps of food and darting away anytime a little kid sticks its head out and shouts, “Oh, what a cute doggy!” And around where I live it is, sadly, an everyday scene.…
