A local weather man Phil becomes annoyed when he must travel to Punxsutawney to cover Groundhog Day. Eventually Phil must repeat the day over and over. In the beginning, he uses the reputation of meaningless things. Towards the end Phil tries to convince a member of the news crew Rita to fall in love with him every day. When that fails day after day Phil decides to use the day and do something good. He saves lives and does other good things to eventually lead Rita to falling in love with him and the day not repeating. Phil finally gave the homeless man on the corner money, he took him out to eat, even tried to save his life. Phil went around town noticing new people that needed help every day the women with the flat tire, the guy choking, the boy falling out of the tree. Phil started to make a difference to create meaning in his short condemned to one-day life. Phil found who he really was during this time, his good faith helped him get the girl and the next day. He began to live authentically.
Phil was living inauthentically before repeating Groundhog Day and even in the beginning of the repetition. He lived inauthentically by letting things such as sex and money factor the way he spent Groundhog Day. This lead to his loneliness and suicide many times, like the father of existentialism says living inauthentically can lead to. Phil let outside sources effect his decisions in life and how he portrayed his self to the world. Later on, Phil becomes at peace with his existence living the same day. He began to be true to himself and others. What he thought and felt was represented he did not hide his feelings for Rita anymore and began to be nice to Terry. Money and sex no longer played a part of his life. Phil was proud of who he was and who he had become.
